NCCU students have to use hotel's back door

DURHAM -- The Durham Hilton recently issued written rules barring students at N.C. Central University, a historically black school, from using the hotel's front door, an act NCCU's chancellor called "unconscionable."

Lee Jefferson, an NCCU senior living at the Hilton while several university dorms are being renovated, said he was offended by the seven-page contract he was asked to sign.

"It doesn't help that NCCU is a black school and it's in the South. It's reminiscent of segregation and Jim Crow."

NCCU Chancellor James H. Ammons said he was disturbed to learn Tuesday that students were told not to use the front entrance.

"It really unconscionable that in 2003 our students are being asked to use a side and rear entrance," he said. "That's not what I expected from the people we're doing business with in the city of Durham."

when I see this sort of news. My sister, who's in law school at Central, was mortified, despite her evil republicanism.
