Black Box: Introducing a new call to action
Edited on Mon Sep-01-03 10:44 PM by BevHarris
Folks, my husband is now taking a visible position in the fight:

I come from North Carolina, where my grandfather, great grandfather on my father's side were both civil rights/voting rights activists, registering people to vote, risking their lives.

On my mother's side were Baptist ministers who did the same, as activists. I'm a life long A.M.E. Zion member. I've marched in every civil rights action throughout the northwest.

I've just convinced my daughter to register to vote, but like a lot of young people, she's very skeptical, and rightly so, of the system we have set up.

It's our duty to continue the struggle to make it right for all in America.

Many people of color distrust and refuse to participate in the system as it is now. It leads to such things as not enough data for health programs, and not enough participation in getting grant money, those types of things. The majority community has shown that it doesn't care and will squash anybody who doesn't march to their tune.

So, consequently we have people who have valid opinions and ideas that don't say anything and won't do anything because they may not be there tomorrow (does that sound a little bit like a foreign country?)

This is a step, a small one, towards building some trust and communication that may help us secure and validate our right not only to vote, but to exist, in this vacuum.

I encourage the brothers and the sisters to come aboard on this effort, which is almost like a rear attack. But we can do it. Like Sly said, "You can make it if you try."

Let me know if you're with me. I'm going to set up some more formats so we can start taking action -- watch for this at blackboxvoting.org

15. Fantastic!!! And I am not afraid either...
Sonny,

We all owe you a huge debt of gratitude... you and all your family. The support you have provided Bev has clearly been totally outstanding.

So thankyou. Thankyou ever so much. You have already done so much.

And on the new campaign front. This is fantastic news. Count me in. Anything I can do to help.. just ask. (Not that I can probably do a great deal out of Wellington, NZ. But please consider what resources I have at your disposal.)

Ultimately what you are beginning here is probably the most important task of all. This will have to grow into a massive grassroots movement if it is to succeed. Not only does the voting apparatus have to be taken back from the liars and the theives... but once back in community control and using machinery that we can trust to count the votes, it will need to be nurtured and protected.

Only the real people in real places, all over America, will be able to do that.

I hope and pray that a resurgence in interest in the process of voting, and in protecting its integrity, will lead to a resurgence in the number of voters in the United States. There is as you say a great deal of damage that needs to be undone.

We have just begun.

Thankyou SonnyD!

Al

36. A note of caution... Don't make this a "lefty" issue.
There are many people on the libertarian and "conservative" Christian axis who are very concerned about Black Box Voting.

Myself, I'm mostly a left wing Catholic Socialist who very much enjoys dancing in the furnace, but many people do not believe that asbestos suits and flamethrowers are appropriate attire for political or religious discussions.

Yes, I'm playing the "We Shall Overcome Dudley Mix" as I write this, and it rocks. But it ain't gonna be the anthem that's shaking my car doors as I drive deep within the fearful "Homeland" of America.

I'll put on my headphones and play Radar Love... It always reminds me to be careful on that last pass.

And the newsman sings his same old song, one more radar lover gone.

BTW, anybody got a nice non-denominational, non-partisan BBV trifold pamphlet yet?

37. Good point: So far we've gotten the support of
- The Georgia Green Party
- The Georgia Libertarian Party
- Various Democratic organizations
- Various members of the Socialist Party
- Gun activists
- Lifelong Republicans

What Sonny D is doing is focusing on bringing the civil rights community aboard.

You are absolutely right that the multipartisan nature of this must come out, but you do this by working directly with activists from each group and letting them flavor it the way they want.

And yes, the Dudley Mix of We Shall Overcome does rock. It's been used on commercials for civil rights issues for some time now. (There's a raw version of it, somewhat off tune, called "We Shall Undercount (Your Vote)" that they recorded back in 2000, found on MP3.com.

The Dudley Mix was in the top 100 on MP3.com for nearly two years. Any of you who want to use the anthem for voting rights activities and commercials, it is available without restrictions.
