Oliver North is coming to Modesto.

North is a "combat-decorated" Marine, but his war record is not the reason he became a celebrity.

North became famous because he was the central figure in the 1980s Iran-Contra scandal. As a staff member for the National Security Council, North secretly arranged to sell weapons to Ayatollah Khomeini's regime in Iran in exchange for the possible release of American hostages in Lebanon. This "arms-for-hostages" deal put HAWK missiles in the hands of radical Muslim leaders.

Then North channeled the profits from these weapons deals with Iran into secret accounts that funded Contra rebels in Nicaragua. North called the Contras "freedom fighters;" others considered them murdering thugs and drug runners. Either way, his scheme was blatantly illegal. It defied both a congressional ban and the expressed policy of the State Department.

Oliver North lied to Congress about his activities. He destroyed incriminating evidence and fabricated documents. He admitted these deeds and openly boasted about his subversion of U.S. foreign policy. North denied he ever took money for his own personal gain, but this crime also was proven.
