"Low key" commemorations of the terrorist incidents anniversary
Had figured the commemorations of the anniversary of the Sept 11 terrorist incidents would be fairly "low key" this year.

Had also suspected that people who particularly wanted them to be "low key" were people who either had Sept 11 birthdays or whose loved ones had birthdays on that day so they could celebrate without feeling as if they were being as irreverent towards what happened.

Am sure even New Yorkers and the victims' loved ones wanted them to be "low key" for they may have wanted a proper investigation into what happened instead of any further commemorations.

2. Had gotten the feeling it may be that way for
I hadn't seen as many "commemorative" items this year as I had last year.

3. Maybe 'commemorations' is the wrong word, but
a friend has that birthday, and it doesn't bother her in the least.

4. Remember the garishness of last year?
A mall in my area hired a band to play.
A few workplaces in this area allowed their normally business-attired employees to wear jeans -- if they wore red, white and blue.
The Topica e-mail service SHUT DOWN its groups in commemoration (and didn't bother to tell anyone until they visited the site that day). Um, this includes groups whose members probably needed each other for moral support that day.
