7. From the forum in question ...
"A re-evalution of one's political ideology is only a pinkslip away.... "

There's a tag line.

3. More of the Same
It's not any different than going to visit a Free Republic forum or a Fox News forum. They have their views and they aren't going to change them much like we have our views and are not going to change them.

The Republican Party will carry the military vote again in 2004. Why? Because of Iraq and Afghanistan. Note they won't lose the military vote because of Iraq and Afghanistan, but they will retain the military vote because of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Just like any other group, not all military people are conservatives who crave inequality and authority. I think in some of our tarring and feathering that goes on here at DU we forget that little concept known as diversity.

4. I think Iraq and Afghanistan and Bush's military pay cuts
Edited on Wed Sep-03-03 10:49 AM by w4rma
will hurt the Republican Party and the military vote. I do think that some DUers should be more respectful of military cultrure, but I know that the vast majority of DUers support the troops and want to give them raises instead of cuts and bring them home to their families sooner, rather than later.

I also think that liberals should post articles of Bush's pay cuts and poor respect of soldiers all over military boards.

Your pay’s the thing: ’04 pay raise might be cut

5. Pffffft...
I frequent one military board (I'm not military, but those on the board are) where they are currently discussing whether Bush could or should be reelected. The overwhelming majority think he is doing a fine job and should be reelected. CLINTON gets rapped for his adventures overseas, but not Bush. Many don't agree that the budget deficit is his fault. It's the fault of spending. Specifically mentioned is spending on women with 12 fatherless brats. This guy wants government to keep its hands out of his (tax payer funded) pay check. Incidently, this board I watch is made up largely of graduates of a certain military academy, so this guy gets not only a tax-payer funded pay check, but the tax payer probably paid for his education. There is no argument worth the time it would take to type it for this kind of thinking.

6. I Have Five HS and College Buddies

Who are graduates of a certain military academy in New York and are either active Army or in the Reserves. They are some of the most militantly conservative people I know and embrace the opportunity to go overseas and "get some" regardless of where or what the reason may be. These are people with college educations and who came from what most would call a relatively stable upbringing. They are not lonely manifesto-writers or angry products of abusive homes. The one I knew from high school had a seemingly good head on his shoulders and was very even-tempered. Now he is an unwavering, hateful conservative.

None of them are politically inclined, but will all dogpile with the usual ignorant conservative tripe if the topic switches to something political. None of them saw anything wrong with the notion that I pointed out to them that them criticizing mythological recipients of federal taxpayer largess was not exactly "fair and balanced" in light of their own total funding from the same source.

On the same subject, one of my most liberal friends is a graduate of a certain military academy in Maryland. He is everything my Army friends are not: Tolerant, critcally-thinking, socially-liberal but still very decisive. That serves to me as a nice reminder that not all military people deserve to be tarred with the "ultra conservative" label and its associated baggage.

10. There is diversity -- some posters are ex-military, ...
others may have family members in the military in Iraq. That is also true of peace groups all over the U.S. And there is the potential for the Bushistas to lose the military vote precisely over Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as over cuts to the VA and in other benefits for military families and for vets. Note that some on here support Kerry in part because he can run as a military hero, so has the potential of drawing military votes.

9. Any group of people . . .
That cites Ann Coulter as a source for their definition of liberal is not worthy of attention.
