Whoa! Watch this go down the memory hole!
Now WHO exactly wants a larger UN role in Iraq?

This story says Bush does ... and this almost identical story, posted 30 minutes later, say it's Powell.

So who's it going to be? Better clean this mess up KKKarl.

1. Good catch, GregW!
Course, if I were the UN, I wouldn't give EITHER of them a dime till they had crawled on their hands and knees across a floor littered with broken glass to kiss the hem of my robe.

Ah well.

2. The UN should make major deals on future invasions
The UN's in the driver's seat....take advantage of it.

3. Whomever it is...
The UN holds the whip hand in these negotiations. The UN's role would be, in truth, bailing the collective ass of the maladministration out. For that, they should demand and receive a rather complete set of considerations from them. In essence, lay the leather into their kidneys, early and often.

It's the only thing the will truly understand.

4. The grown-ups at the UN
Although I'm sure it's tempting to let Lil George sit his pampered ass in the mess he's made, the downside is that a lot of innocent people are suffering and dying thanks to his arrogance and foolishness. The UN will resist that temptation and do what it can to alleviate the situation. And even though part of that price will fall on me personally, I hope they extract a very high price from Lil George for their services.

6. There is something to be said, though, for the UN
treating us like the rogue nation that we are.

In other words: there should be some kind of conditions put in place about our conduct after the bailout, to ensure that once we can extricate ourselves from Iraq we don't then immediately start ANOTHER illegal war.

C ya,

That would make a bailout by the U.N. more like a surrender to the U.N. Which is what where I thought this was headed several days ago. I still do.

7. Escaping the consequences
Sorry but that is what Georgie boy has done all his life and it has culminated with this disaster he has created. Daddy can't bail him out this time but the UN can and if it does, you can bet he will have this turned around WELL before '04 to a "UN sanctioned invasion" as opposed to an "unsanctioned invasion"....then you can welcome in another 4 of him and his murderous hawks.
I bleed each day for the misery and suffering his arrogant, ignorant and greedy acts have caused but to allow him to escape the political consequences is like turning a serial killer loose with a knife and some car keys...he will be free to keep on killing. The chances of getting rid of him for GOOD (and ensuring that he goes down in history as the lying fraud he is) is to keep him stuck exactly where he stuck himself. Let the beast loose now and there will be no stopping him

of a failing administration that doesn't know what it is doing. They have lied so many times that they can't even keep track of whose turn it is to lie this time.

Edited on Wed Sep-03-03 10:43 AM by Generic Other
Make them stand before the most powerful antiwar statement ever created, the painting by Picasso which was covered over when Colin Powell came to the UN to argue for our right to wage pre-emptive war against other nations.

I want to hear Powell and Bush apologize to the millions worldwide who opposed their war. I want to hear them apologize to the thousands who marched in San Francisco, NYC, Seattle, Chicago, Ohio, Florida, Washington DC, Boston. And I want to hear them apologize to the Iraqi people. But most of all, I want to hear them apologize to the troops whose lives they sacrificed.

Anything less is criminal.

11. There is no way Kkkarl can't not upset their "base" on this
and that is Rule numero uno with the Rovians.

They are going to say Powell wanted to do for two reasons:
1.This gets W off the hook with the base (not that they aren't going to vote for him anyway but they must show a united front ya know)

2.Powell is the only way anyone at the UN would even consider this. W would be shown the door if he went there himself.

12. I thought (Bush did anyway) that we didn't need the UN for jack shit
No matter who wants it, the real story is that this administration is now going wagging its tail between its legs back to the UN asking them to clean up their shit.

13. I hope the UN does NOT bail out this crew.
Edited on Wed Sep-03-03 11:41 AM by berry
I know it seems better for the UN to handle the problems in Iraq--but please look at this thread with an article by the Guardian's George Monbiot. There are several reasons why the UN might be wise to hold back--not least of which is that there is no guarantee that the US, freed up in Iraq, will not launch another war.

But there's more. He (and the World Citizen Foundation that he references) suggests an immediate setting up of a constitutional convention. Do the democracy first. Give all the power to Iraqis--then the UN could easily go in. (The flaw here is that Bush* is probably incapable of following this excellent advice--which was out there as early as May 2 at the WCF site.)

Anyway, here's the link:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=103&topic_id=9028

edited to correct logical inconsistency (I *think* it's better now...). Anyway, the important thing is the link. Do take a look.

...the language in the new resolution concerning the oil.

Will it be specific or will it be ambiguous enough to give Bushco wiggle room?

16. The really bad thing is
The people of Iraq are in desperate need of help as are our
troops. However, I truly believe the UN would in the long
run, be saving the World from this Administration's insanity if
they teach them a very good lesson. We belittled the UN and
they know it - if they give in, the Bushies will always know
they can get away with murder and the UN will eventually cave.

As I said though, innocents will suffer because of this, but
sometimes tough love is necessary if not easy.

17. Well, well, well ... they DID change the headline
This story now has the headline: CORRECTED: U.S. Launches Campaign at U.N. for Wider Iraq Force

So a little bit of historical re-visioning going on here ... Bush doesn't want a larger role ... the US now wants a larger role.
