Johnny Depp may be "Dixie-Chicked" after his remarks. . .
Just referred to the U.S. as a "dumb puppy".

Link:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030903/ap_on_en_mo/germany_depp_3

(snip)
"America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth — that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," Depp was quoted as saying.
(snip)
Depp recalled that French fries were renamed "Freedom" fries in the House cafeteria on Capitol Hill at the height of U.S. anger over France's refusal to back the administration of President George W. Bush...over the war in Iraq.
(snip)
"Nothing made me happier than when I read that — grown men and grown women in positions of power in the United States government," Depp said. "I was ecstatic because they revealed themselves as idiots."
(snip)

BTW, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star lives in the south of France.

He's got money, fame and there are still plenty of people that will go see his movies.

3. I doubt very much Mr. Depp will care about the right-wing attacks
he's likely to get, as he lives in the South of France primarily because he doesn't care for the Hollywood scene, and I've heard him say he acts because he loves to act, and not because he needs the money. I think he can speak the truth and never fear the consequences, which is pretty friggin' cool.

She's really hot and really great in bed... but she's out of her f-ing mind. SHe's always picking fights and treating your freinds like crap. You're always being embarassed by her, but just when you think you can't stand any more of her BS, the lights go out and ahhhhhhh, somehow it is all worth it.

15. I think you underestimate the "chick'ing" effect
yes, their current album continued to sell, but there have been no further single releases or at least any that went anywhere.

Bear in mind that they had been building this career of theirs for a decade or more and this release was to have gotten them into the top eschelon to stay. And it would have if they had not adlibbed that sentiment loooking to play up to a partisan local audience that the press made into an international one. That work is certainly in doubt at this time. We'll see how quickly the next release hits and if it goes anywhere.

Now I know that Mr Depp doesn't care if he does another big movie or not. After 'Pirates' he won't need much for quite a while. In reality, he may have done this to insure that the inevitable sequel does not include Captain Jack Sparrow in it. He really does not like the notarity, never has and has regularly said and done things to spurn it (the free publicity angle does not work with him).

Anyway, I hope he does make the sequel, I loved 'Pirates' !

57. I disagree,
The dixie chicks got an even broader audience that will more than make up for the idiots that they lost. If anything, their music will become more sophisticated. I look forward to see what they come out with, just as I do with all the true outlaw country stars like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson etc..

The Dixie Chicks are officially part of the exclusive country outlaw group. They have shed their 15 minute pop country skin, they will be timeless.

67. the whole purpose of that album was to go crossover
and thats why it was successful, it did that. However its likely that they have cut off their base country roots support. And pop is notoriously fickle. By the time they release their next effort pop could be onto the next thing. By that I mean that female singers with or without country twang are hot right now. Wasn't so long ago it was boy bands. Next thing we could be back to baratone grunge acts.

We'll all want to watch when their next release come out. My bet is that it fizzles without the base support.

85. No, not really...
They were in a dispute with Sony, wanting a greater percentage of the take & more control. So they took some time off. During that time, they cut some "demos" produced by Natalie's father Lloyd Maines--more acoustic, less highly produced.

Once the label dispute was resolved (favorably for them), they decided the demos sounded OK & just released that sucker. It sold better than any of their previous albums.

Don't be afraid for their future.

11. I think Depp should be held in contempt
It's not fair to the millions of Americans who oppose Bush to lump all of us in one broad generalization and call us "dumb." Furthermore, a real patriot doesn't flee to France (while returning to the US to make money) when his country is going through a dark time -- he stays and fights to make things better. I'm so sick of hearing all this "If Bush gets re-elected I'm leaving the country" bullshit and all the threads on DU asking "Which country should I emigrate to?" If your allegiance to the United States is so tenuous that one man's transient policies are enough to make you leave, I say good riddance.

However I get defensive when some asshat living in Europe takes it upon himself to pas judgement on the whole US. He's living in a nation that can't keep it's people alive in a heat wave and he's bitching about the US?

Of course he has the right to free speech. How come every time someone disagrees with something that some jackass says, they immediately shriek, "He has the right to say whatever he wants!"

Of course he does. That is not the point. Having the right to say whatever you want does not mean that you should exercise that right by saying asinine things, which is exactly what Depp did.

When you are speaking of the policies of a nation, do you always refer to them like "I agree with the non-agression policies of the current Japanese govornment"? Or are you more likely to say "I agree with Japan's stance of non-aggression"?

65. If he meant the government he should have made that distinction
I disagree with stuff the US government does all the time. And I say so. But I don't say that I think "America is dumb" because America is not the government, whose evanescent policies do not define the essential nature of my country. And I damn sure wouldn't say something like that if I was a celebrity being quoted by a foreign publication. If nothing else, it just looks like a crass, transparent attempt to curry favor with the European press, where it's fashionable to view Americans as ignorant brutes.

Look, I'm not interested in organizing a boycott of this clown's material. I like Depp's work. I just think it was an offensive thing to say, and I am naturally distrustful of people who explicitly make clear that they live outside the US (or plan or desire to leave the US) because of their disapproval of government policies. Such people are irresponsible...you know that when the chips are down, you can't count on 'em. In the tradition of Monty Python, they "Run away!"

Rather than Yahoo's selections without context. Did he volunteer this opinion out of the blue or was he answering a question?

Johnny Depp has lived in Europe for some time and his reasons are not purely political. If he lived in LA, he'd be in some mansion in the hills surrounded by a security fence. His current situation is probably a better place to live & raise his children. He still has American citizenship & probably pays a fair amount of tax.

His career path has never been marked by any effort to curry favor with the press.

Of course you make that distinction when you are talking about the population (yourself) of the US and the lungfish in the White House.

Do you ALWAYS when referring to the policies of other nations refer to them as "the govornment of", or do you sometimes generalize and just refer to the country? I.E. "I don't blame France for telling the bush administration to take a hike."?

As for counting on him when the chips are down.......I don't really know about you, but I certainly wasn't counting on Mr. Depp for anything but that Pirates sequel. My kid loved that movie.

22. Ignorance rears its ugly head, or......?
"It's not fair to the millions of Americans who oppose Bush to lump all of us in one broad generalization and call us "dumb.">

Did you bother to read the article?

Depp slammed George W. Bush's administration for its criticism of French opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

"I was ecstatic they re-named 'French Fries' as 'Freedom Fries'. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots," he told Stern.

Context IS everything.

<"Furthermore, a real patriot doesn't flee to France (while returning to the US to make money) when his country is going through a dark time -- he stays and fights to make things better.">

Johnny Depp fled to France? When did he flee and why did he do it? Just the facts, please.

<"If your allegiance to the United States is so tenuous that one man's transient policies are enough to make you leave, I say good riddance.">

"Transient policies? Do you honestly believe that what Bush* and Co effectuate today, will not have horrendous lasting consequences for years to come?

"Good riddance". Oh my. Your intolerance of others opinions (freedom of speech/expression) certainly tells all.

The foregoing questions were completely rhetorical. Enjoy your stay.

And why does he or anyone have to stay here and fight? WHY? I want a good reason.....why does the idea of someone wanting to leave this insanity seem like bullshit to you?? Must everyone live by your ideas.....???

And what the hell makes up a "real patriot"? There are ways to help your country and then there are ways to help your country and they don't all involve staying to "fight the good" fight here. Your judgement about anyone's "allegiance " to the US is just that...your opinion ....

...and excuse me...."one man's transient policies" ?? It is WAY more than this and again...Depps statement about being stupid...well your comment is proof to me he has a point.

I like a man who can speak his truth no matter the cost...another reason why I like Kucinich.

"Depps statement about being stupid...well your comment is proof to me he has a point."

I love the high intellectual atmosphere here at DU! Make a philosophical point that someone disagrees with and they call you names like little kids. Grow up!

"And why does he or anyone have to stay here and fight? WHY? I want a good reason....."

If you recognize that America weild enormous power, and if you believe that, as in the case of Iraq that power was not used wisely, you have a moral responsibility to stay here and fight to try to ensure that such enormous power is not abused in the future. We lost this latest battle to stop the war, but that doesn't mean we'll lose next time. Unless people like Depp -- and perhaps you -- throw their hands up in surrender, retire to eat cheese in France, and leave America to people like Bush to do as he pleases.

Any questions?

then why would you want to be like me???

My only moral responsibility is to myself...if that responsibility takes me on the path of action on behalf of loved ones and in the broader sense of the people in the country and ultimately the planet - then so be it.

The effort to stop wars begins a lot closer to home...your attitude is a prime example. You see anyone who thinks differently than you as the enemy and therefore not worthy of you. You seem to see only the separation of things...we are all human beings here, living on the same planet- political & geographical lines only matter if you think they do....we are all more alike than you think. The sooner people all figure out they are being jerked around, the better for us all. What possible difference does it make where someone lives??

People are not the enemy...it is the ones who want to control us- by fear and separation...now...do you get it? Any further questions??

Peace
DR

103. It's not just a question of liking the privacy.
Depp said in reference to his children, "I'd like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out."

He's obviously communicating his contempt for America if he wants his children to stay away.

and their followers. I don't feel dissed. I know who he means. And
as for people choosing other paths, fine. Why should it be seen as
disloyalty for others to go elsewhere. We take the tempest tossed
here every day who leave for any number of reasons. Why not let a
few go elsewhere. I don't see them as any less American. They will
be voting absentee overseas ballots, that's all. Paying American

The only thing they won't be doing is living here. They are still

But I get the feeling you wouldn't really care or really even understand. Depp speaks and the sycophants fall all over themselves.

Fact of the matter is, I dont think there is anything progressive about what Depp says or the Hollywood culture as a whole does that helps us. I dont think, as a Democrat, that patriotism is all that bad. I like America, I like Americans.

I don't understand, and I don't care.

What I do understand is this: that you seem to feel that dealing with the public on a one-to-one basis entitles you to a monopoly on how "real" people feel. Apparently the less money or status a person has, the more feelings they have. Is that it?

Depp is famous and when he makes a political statement it makes news. This doesn't mean that people are 'falling all over themselves', and nowhere does he make patriotism an issue. That's your read. If anything him commenting on the idiocy of 'Freedom Fries' is more patriotic than saying nothing.

IMO JD's free to buy a place and live anywhere he wants; he earned his money. I hope he retains his US citizenship and votes. There is no info that says he hasn't and doesn't. He's free to say whatever the heck he wants, from wherever the heck he wants.

Remember, without the votes from Florida citizens living abroad (primarily military, many illegally cast), Bush would not have had enough votes to even contest Florida. So if Americans living abroad can support Bush, and they sure as hell did, Americans living abroad certainly have the means and the right to oppose him too.

Johnny Depp is one of the most talented actors around today, but he seems to still try and take experimental roles instead of ones that would make him a superstar. I think he's kind of a recluse that doesn't want to be a movie star, so he'd almost appreciate being blacklisted.

I remember him saying things like this for quite some time now. He prefers Europe. It seems alot of actors, over the years, have lived in France, particularly, because of the culture. He wants something different than American consumerism and jingoism for his kids. I can't fault him for that. People bitch about it around here all the time. Then when somebody actually tries to raise their family in a different environment, they're a traitor. Totally ridiculous.

"Dixie-Chicked"??

Got news for you my friend. Immediately after the protest against the Dixie Chicks was announced by Clear Channel, to include the fact that Clear Channel was not going to allow their radio stations to play Dixie Chick music, sales of their then-current album shot back up to #1, and every subsequent concert was sold out to include those given in Texas.

About two months later, two DJs played some Dixie Chick music and Clear Channel had them suspended. That lasted all of about two days when DJs all over the country began to protest the action.

We should all be so lucky to be "Dixie-Chicked".

And as far as your inferences about France, I still remember reading in my history books about France coming to our aid during the American Revolution. It seems that France and the U. S. have fought on the same side ever since the Revolution. Some folks don't want to remember that.

I also recall that France ceded huge tracts of land in France to honor our war dead from WWII. The same folks don't want to remember that either.

Rave on, Johnny...keep up the good work!

There's no comparing the Chicks with Depp. All Natalie said was that she was ashamed that Bush was from Texas, if I recall. Nothing remotely offensive about that. The overreaction from the public was staggering.

What Depp said was different. He said that Americans were dumb and that he would raise his kids to stay away from the United States. That, in my opinion, is offensive. Those dumb Americans are the people who made his elitist ass rich and able to afford to live in the south of France like some snobby dilettante.

He has lived in France for years and they have choosen to raise their children as French, which is their choose. The children will grow up to be bi-lingual, well educated and away from the spotlight of being a "Hollywood child."
You have to understand that the world is bombarded with images of America as a the greatest country in world, glamour, wealth, fast food, hollywood, freedom, Disneyland, Gap clothes etc. Depp is trying to teach his children about the reality of his country so they see America as it really is. A country that has so many great things but also has alot of problems too and is not a magic kingdom.
He has always been very low key in his fame, his is gorgoeus but has refused to go down the Tom Cruise path of big blockbusters, when he could have become a superstar of the same mangnitude. He has choosen to remain a serious actor and have a down to earth life.
There is nothing in his comments that say he is elitist, he is popular outside the US, he just told the truth as he saw it.

Of course, in other ways, it's totally insane.... But that's why we like him (& Hunter).

111. I have to agree
that boy has yet to appologize for anything yet and he's not the kind to change now. Disney will back the Brinks truck up for Pirates 2 regardless.

124. He apologized,
but not for his critical remarks. He apologized to "those who were offended, affected, or hurt" by statements he says were quoted completely out of context.

His stance seems quite similar to that of many of us on DU: I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it. It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it.
