CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush (news - web sites) on Thursday said Thanksgiving is a day when Americans are grateful for their families and friends, the many gifts of America and freedom.
The president issued his annual Thanksgiving Proclamation this year from Texas, where he's spending the holiday with family at his ranch. They shared a turkey dinner Wednesday with the visiting king and queen of Spain.
In his message to the nation, Bush noted that George Washington proclaimed the first National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789. Since then, he said, in times of war and in times of peace, Americans have gathered with family and friends to give thanks to God for their blessings.
And he said the true strength of America lies in the hearts and souls of its citizens as they help make the nation and the world a better place.
Question: Did you Americans not all give similar speeches in about third grade for oral reports in History class?
