I Love Bill Maher

For the first time, I logged on to billmaher.com. This is what I found:

Johnny Depp, resident of France, compared the United States to a “stupid puppy” in an interview. President Bush was so upset, he angrily threw his dog onto the tarmac. It’s no surprise that Drudge, Hannity, O’Reilly, etc. are all over this story; there’s nothing that stirs up that ole right-wing outrage faster than a celebrity dissing America, the land that made them rich. It’s bogus outrage, of course. They’re not really mad at Depp because he “hates America,” they’re jealous at Depp because he makes a lot money and lives a carefree, happy life with a beautiful French actress, while the average Rush Limbaugh listener is an overweight middle manager with a dead-end job and a loveless marriage.

and he usually gives a good explanation of why he supports certain issues. people say he is arrogant, obnoxious, and i agree, but see nothing wrong with that. i just find him interesting to listen to.

5. Maher is great, despite what many will tell you...

I'd rather someone who is equally brutal to both sides and thinks for himself and says things that just need to be said than someone who is strictly partisan and simply preaches to the choir.

I disagree with about 40% of what Maher says but I always respect the way in which he says it.

His political position on a given day seems to fluctuate with his hormones or something.

8. Maher

He's sort of an odd conglomeration of political stands. He calls himself a Libertarian (he opposes prohibition of drugs, pornography and prostitution), but he's really more of a left-leaning centerist on most issues (pro-foreign intervention, pro-choice, anti-ANWAR drilling, pro-Kyoto, pro-public education and moderate on gun control).

He can be amusing, but does have just a touch too much smugness to be really personable...oh, that and he makes terrible movies (e.g. Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death).
