"Bush Picks Kellogg CEO for Commerce Post" -- time to boycott Kellogg?
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 10:46 PM by villager
man, I buy Kellogg's cereals, when they're on sale. Maybe I better knock off that habit right now...

Bush Picks Kellogg CEO for Commerce Post

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) picked Carlos Gutierrez, the chief executive officer of cereal giant Kellogg Co., as commerce secretary Monday, working to build a new economic team to help sell second-term overhauls of Social Security and the tax code.

The nomination was Bush's first step in replacing his economic advisers. The White House offered no promise of job security to Treasury Secretary John Snow, who has made clear he wants to remain.

Officials said the challenges of the second term could require leaders with different skills from the first term when the biggest problems were pushing tax cuts and dealing with recession.

Bush called Gutierrez a visionary and one of America's most respected business leaders, a man who rose to the top at Kellogg's from a first job as a truck driver in Mexico City peddling Frosted Flakes to local stores. Born in Cuba and brought to America at age 6, he had learned English from a bellhop at a Miami hotel.

"He is a great American success story," the president said. "He understands the world of business from the first rung on the ladder to the very top."

<snip>

and now he gets to whittle that ladder away for everyone else!

6. Dumbest statement I've ever heard
My boss is a repuke too, should I boycott our product? First of all, there doesn't seem to be any indication that by selecting the CEO of Kellog that Kellog "supports bush" so that's bunk. Also, it's as idiotic as the repukes boycotting Evian or Perrier (or whatever) because it's French. They failed to notice it was bottled & distributed in the US by Coke. So, before boycotting some company because of one guy, think about the line workers, truck drivers, packagers, shippers, etc...

10. but then we couldn't boycottt Wal-Mart or any other company...
All boycotts would be toothless, because there'd always be a reason not to do 'em

And words like "idiotic" belong to your AM radio phonecalls, btw...

33. I didn't see the company being bushy.
Just the CEO. And if he is no longer the CEO, then probably any corporate support for the Bushco would go down.

5. Absolutely!
I live in Kalamazoo, and my husband is a doctor in Battle Creek, home of Kellogg's. Please don't hurt the good people who live here. Yeah, the CEO sucks, as many around here have been saying for awhile, but that's not a good reason to hurt the workers here. We go to church in Battle Creek and are moving there this spring, and a lot of my husband's patients and our church friends are with Kellogg's somehow.

There's got to be some way we can boycott Bush.

8. Kellog's should have been boycotted since 1910.
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 11:47 PM by Touchdown
...or whenever it started. Any self respecting teenage (or adult) masturbater should boycott Kellog's because that's what Kellog though his cereals would cure. He started his company, because he thought a nutritious diet would stop the evils of self abuse. Who cares if it didn't work, and that nutrition keeps sexual energy heightened, which is the opposite of what he hypothesized. He didn't start it because Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies taste good, he started it because he was a religious puritanical nutjob.

Of course he's dead now, and even I can enjoy a bowl of Super Sugar Crisp ...excuse me...GOLDEN Crisp :eyes: ...every now and then.

17. Sugar Pops, I mean Corn Pops , are better
But they are VERY sensitive to humidity so you should store them in Tupperware. Kinda like Cheez Doodles, they last ten minutes in the backyard on a summer day.

All this boycott stuff is silly- you gotta eat Something, you gotta wear something. You can't parse every person's ideology to the extreme.

Some places are obvious- Wal-Mart, Disney. Nuance guys, it's not a dirty word. Nuance.

Nothing at all wrong with Kellogg or our blue state of Michigan! I happen to think, at last, Dubya made ONE decent decision. This guy is a Bush supporter, but not in the "Ranger" league of a HUGE donator.

24. well, "better" is a relative term...
There are always store brands, for example... And in any case, if "who provides Bush personnel" and "who doesn't" is one basis for an "economic vote," then I'm all for it...

They just slap a store brand label on it and there you go.

22. What's the outcome supposed to be?
When you call for a boycott, you have to have a clear goal that the object of your boycott can agree with in order for the boycott to be withdrawn.

What do you want Kellogg's to do?

25. another fair question...
They won't "recall" their executive -- it'd just be to let them know that as long as Kellogg executives (in this case - this could apply to lots of corporations, obviously) supply personnel for the most unhinged, Constitution-loathing administration in U.S. history, consumers will be "withdrawing" their economic support of said company.

When their personnel have the common decency to leave this administration, economic support can return...

Their former personnel are in the administration.

You're asking them to exert influence on a former employee.

Just like Rice was picked after the Standford/Hoover Institute folks allowed her to keep incubating her "theories."

That's their right -- mine is to use my pocketbook as I see fit

34. Boycott
I'm in Canada, and while I really don't want to see more people out of work etc, there are alot of people in the world (including some in the US) who are boycotting all U.S. products and services. It is not about the people who work for these companies, it is about not feeding the Bush war machine - less money coming in to the US means less money for the Govt. to collect in taxes. I know that 49% voted against Bush but he still got elected and this is one of the consequences of what the 51% voted for - they stated quite clearly that they did not care about, need or have any interest in the feelings of the other 5.7 billion inhabitants of the planet. Now those 5.7 billion will respond to their statement.

27. Name brand cereal is too expensive
Spartan makes a very good version of lots of name brand cereals. I'm partial to their version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Kelloggs does have a good factory tour for kids on field trips. They showed us a lot of their facility and gave us a bunch of little boxes of cereal to take home.
