DU Soldiers*** UPDATE***
I saw my friends Mary & Jim last night, and their son said the guys are so incredibly happy with the care packages.. They look forward to mail call, wondering if there will be something for them that day..

We do have one calamity, though, she said they were "cleaning up" a bit and Chris realized afterwards, that someone threw out the card that he had "his carepackage angel's" name & address on... He asked Jimmy to ask his mom to ask me..:eyes: he was ready to write a thank you and now the address is lost.

He said it was Mary and she was from either VA or W Va.. PM me if you are that person.. He said he thought she had also sent something to Mike..

Also , one of their crew has gotten his hands on a small tv with a dvd built in, so if any of you have dvds that you are sick of watching, they have electricity (sporadically) and they can watch dvds now..:)

It was 135 degrees one day last week where they are, but they are adjusting to the heat..

7. funny you should mention that
I looked up tips for care packages and it said that Skittles and Tootsie Rolls are commonly served in MREs - in other words, SOLDIERS ARE SICK OF THEM.

8. Hang in there - I just got a letter this past Saturday
And my soldier sent it 8/12 - so he must've at least got the package fairly quick.

10. Thanks, a little patience is in order
I'm getting my second package ready and I really wanted to hear the group's requests before I sent it out.

9. BTW, I just checked the zip code restriction
Looks like there's been an update and you can legally send that beef jerky (I sent one last time then worried about the meat restriction). This site - http://www.oconus.com/ - only pork is now restricted.

12. Mary sends Jimmy all kinds of stuff that's "marginally prohibited"
She sends him beanie weenies, tuna, canned chicken & roast beef, beej jerkey, vienna sausages.. They have never gotten into trouble for it :)

13. Do you have any names not taken??
Have a little story to tell...

Last Fri I sent out another package, (haven't heard anything on the first one) but forgot to sign the customs card. I went back into the PO Tues. and mentioned that we were only quessing what to send Josh because we don't know him. The Postmaster was curious about how we got his name and I told her a bit of the story. (This is a "Freeper Town" so I'm careful.)

She thinks it's so wonderful that she wants a list of names/address to put up on HER (Post Office's) side of the public bulletin board!

She has already taken money out of her own pocket to help a new mother send newborn baby photos to his Daddy over there. In her words, "This war is going so badly, we've got to help our troops out."

I'd be happy to supply her with any names. :-)

14. Here's an idea for you
The postmaster should start asking the people who go to the post office to mail letters to their sons/boyfriends etc, to start putting their names up and have the whole town get behind their soldiers..

Or she could put up a sign asking people to provide names & apo's of soldiers who might need a little TLC ...

What people do not realize, is that if you are a young Mom with a few kids, and Daddy's been called up, there is not a lot of EXTRA money to send goodies to Daddy.. This is where the local people can help out..

It might even make a nice local interest story in the newspaper.. It would be nice to have an idea like this snowball into something bigger.. I feel kind of sorry for the ones who don't get stuff, and our guys seem to have a lot of folks sending them stuff now ...

19. "what else should I include?" . . .
From what I hear — food, food, food. And anything that mixes with water like ice tea or punch mix. I guess the water there tastes bad.
