What If.....

Over the past week or two, news related to Iran and their wanting to develop a nuclear weapon has received almost as much attention as the War in Iraq. Also, Russia has been poking threats at the United States that our foreign policy is Dictator-like. All of this information is beginning to worry me, big time.

Now, I have a few questions for you guys. But, before you answer, I ask that you put away your opinions toward Bush and Company aside. Please, just answer based on facts and what you truly think.

1.) Do you think he will propose the draft?
2.) Do you think it will make it through congress?
3.) When do you think he will propose the idea?
4.) Would it be better to just sign up before you get your notice?

I'm sorry if you guys think this is a meaningless topic and a waste of space. But, Ill be honest, I'm scared. I'm 20 years old and the oldest sibling in my family. I know that if there is a draft, I am PRIME MEAT. I just need some info to clear my mind or info that will make me face the grim reality.

At this point an attack on Iran will be perceived by China as an attack on them now that they have signed large long term oil contracts.
Don't think any president wants to go there.

3. Well, the thing is...

I CAN'T put away my feelings on Bush and Cheney with respect to these questions. I thionk that this crowd of thugs is very relevant to those questions. So...
Yes to 1 and 2
3) I see it coming pretty soon, within a few months. We're getting our clock cleaned in Iraq, and there will have to be something done to save face soon. I think what is going on right now is just the waiting for the inauguration, because afterwards it will look more "final"
4) If indeed there is a draft, and you know you will be drafted, then yes, strategically, it would be better to sign up first. You're more likely to get a choice of what you want to do that way.

7. Join the National Guard

I understand that you can walk away, just like our glorious leader did, if you decide you don't like it.

Actually the Navy or possibly the Air Force would be good choices. Less chance of seeing Iraq upclose and personal.

19. The Navy is remote control.

There is no other significant navy in the world, so nothing can challenge them. They sit at screens that resemble video games and press buttons, and then call it a day.

6. if we invade Iran

it will be with the troops that are already in Iraq and Afghanistan. not new troops via a draft or anything.

I'd suspect it will go through Congress, and it'll pass with wide support.

He'll probably push for this in March, 2005.

I'd avoid signing up at all costs. I don't think there will be a draft. They'll be calling up WWII vets before they start up a draft.

10. I disagree

I think you may be right in that they will use the troops already there, but as it stands now, we don't have control of Iraq or Afghanistan. There's going to be more troops there at some point, because these guys are like pit bulls-they have no intention of ever letting go of the region. They think it belongs to them. So, if they do attack Iran, they will have to replace the Iraqi troops.
Actually, I still think Syria is on the list at some point. Look for the "the WMDs were taken to Syria" meme to show up again...

8. Air Force is a good choice

With a few exceptions, we deploy for 4 months every 20 months. We have the shortest and least frequent deployments of any branch. That and we have the best life-style of any branches.

Army deploys for 15 months, and you can deploy again after 90 days. Avoid the Army at all costs.

The Marine Corps deploy for 7 months, although I'm not sure how frequently.

Not sure about Navy. But they go out to sea, so it's a different ball game.

Air Force is your best choice if you're going into the military.

Im not going to run out right now and sign up. I was just thinking about it and if their is a draft and it does get through congress. I was thinking whether or not it would be in my best interest to sit around and wait to see if my number is called or just sign up.

11. AF is best choice, but don't sign up until it's a done deal and your

birthday has been pulled

the other thing to consider is they are talkin about a "specialized" draft for medical and tech workers. If you fit in one of those catagories you will need to watch very closely as the draft (if it comes) may not be based on birthdays like in Viet Nam

yes there will be a draft..even without Iran! There will be a draft just to keep up the numbers needed in Iraq. If we do attack Iran, it will be nuclear, because it is the only way..even with the draft. MY opinion only, but i would say plan your escape now..get your passport just in case.

I'm starting to doubt a draft. I just don't have any convictions at all anymore about the character of these people. I can't tell if they're fascists or just criminals.

If there is one, I won't be going. They'll have to catch me first, and if they do catch me, I won't cooperate.

If it did get to the point were a draft was instated. Would branches like the navy and airforce stop applications? I figure if there is a need for a draft they will need ground troops not "tech guys."

Im a Computer Science major at school. Im only a Sophomore so I have'nt gotten into anything major yet. But, I will be A+ certified by the end of the semester. Therefore, I would hope to land a tech job.

If you are already 20 you should be fine it's people that turn 18 in 2005 or younger that are at risk.

Why would they draft kids fresh out of high school when the could draft young adults? For instance, people from 20-26?

Actually I think I could land a fairly safe position as well. Running away is not to keep myself safe, but to protest and waste resources.
