That is the conclusion I have drawn from the many lies and subterfuges they have continuously resorted to even before Bush was (s)elected in 2000.The totally fabricated persona of a born again man who has repented his sinful ways of the past stank to high heavens. His drug habits, his alcoholism, his sexual escapades with teenage girls and ,of course, his cowardly draft dodging had to be swept under the rug under the guise of a repentant sinner who regretted that past.Despite all these efforts, the Republicans knew that if left alone Bush would sink like a lead balloon unless something else was manufactured to bolster his nonexistent warrior like qualities.Out came the 9/11 "incident" a veritable New Pearl Harbor and a new enemy was born, the dreaded Muslim Terrorist to replace the other dreaded evil "Communist" menace. Not only was Bush's despicable past erased, but he was now crowned as the savior who was going to take us to the promised land of safety, Winston Churchill style. Myth after myth had to be created, first of all to induce paranoia and secondly to promote this nonentity to the status of a savior.
All of these simply point to me how they have given up leveling with the American people because that would be the death of this manufactured persona.
The political fear is equally well matched in the economic sphere. In that sphere, American corporations are getting their hindquarters whipped by more peaceful economies.Having given up any pretense of competing with Japanese or German or Chinese or Indian Corporations, the Bush administration has resorted to outright thuggery to steal the resources of poor Third World nations.
We are now into a realm of make believe, Bush style. He has certainly no intention of ever leveling with the American people because it would mean the end of his political career. He will continue to manufacture more and more lies, until we all reach the moment of revulsion that Paul Krugman predicted will occur. I hope that happens soon.
