By James Moore (Filed: 03/12/2004)
De La Rue, the company with a licence to print money, yesterday said it was cutting 350 jobs as part of a shake-up to ensure it stays profitable.
The company, which led the consortium that produced Iraq's new banknotes, will also try to sell its loss-making US voting machine manufacturer and restructure its struggling Portuguese ATM servicing operation. It bought the businesses two years ago.
Some 150 of the job losses will hit the company's Portsmouth factory, which makes cash counting machines used in banks and which it wants to close by the end of 2006.
De La Rue, which employs 2,700 people in the UK, has also axed a number of positions at its head office, with the remaining job cuts spread across its international operations including Portugal and the US.
The job losses come despite the company yesterday saying that first-half pre-tax profits surged to £12m from just £200,000 as sales increased from £290m to £318m.
