When he arrived in Washington in February 1841, Harrison let Daniel Webster edit his Inaugural Address, ornate with classical allusions. Webster obtained some deletions, boasting in a jolly fashion that he had killed "seventeen Roman proconsuls as dead as smelts, every one of them."

Webster had reason to be pleased, for while Harrison was nationalistic in his outlook, he emphasized in his Inaugural that he would be obedient to the will of the people as expressed through Congress.

But before he had been in office a month, he caught a cold that developed into pneumonia. On April 4, 1841, he died--the first President to die in office--and with him died the Whig program.

Because unlike George Bush who pretends to be an economic populist, Andrew Jackson actually was one. He was pro "small government" but this was before the time of big corporations, where government regulation wasn't necessary. On the flip side, Jackson was corrupt as hell and engaged in the whole Tariff crisis for personal reasons. Yea and there is that whole trail of tears thing. I remember in 7th grade US History, our teacher taught us about the Jackson administration but left out everything regarding violence toward the Indians. On the test I wrote an essay about how Jackson was a good man but a bad president. How WRONG I was.

Ulysses S. Grant is a close second in my opinion. Grant's Administration paved the way for corporate corruption when they started legislating in the interest of the railroads and banks. Ulysses S. Grant's presidency legalized political contributions from corporations, entitled corporations to the same rights as persons and pretty much defied the values of our founding fathers. If it wasn't for Grant and his administration paving the way for the corporate corruption of our government, we might not have the mess we're dealing with today.

And, in doing so, laid the foundation for the 1877 "compromise" which removed northern troops from the south, thus condemning millions of freed slaves and their descendents to decades of oppression and murder.

But, Richard Nixon gets my vote. A murderous sociopath who also engineered the "southern strategy" of uniting the poor whites against their own best self interest, into a powerful force of redneck power.
