A.M. Big News Story--"Bush is a Miserable Failure"--Gephardt

Watched C-Span WJ this a.m. as host reading from the newspapers across the country. They started the show with this as the topic because host said showed that it was the major news item all over the country regarding last night's debate. Hot Line guy who was out there and reporting from the campaign said that the candidates all admitted behind the scenes that it was "the" line of the night. Apparently (haven't seen debate yet) was the high point of the evening for the audience which they described as kinda predictable and dragging along with guys giving their usual spin. I guess another moment of note was Lieberman attacking Dean and saying that the "Bush recession would be followed by the Dean depression". Apparently, other than that there was not a lot of blood on the floor. Anyway, I'm loving that the 'failure' remark is making the news today----and you should have heard the calls. They just piled on and the callers challenged the repuke callers to name ONE thing that he has done good----not of one of them could but simply resorted to "he's honest" and "I trust him". Dimwits go down slowly, don't they??

4. Dover--one guy called in on the "support" line for Bush

That was the one that was entitled "No, Bus IS NOT a failure"---anyway the guy said that Bush was absolutely not a failure because he has been tremendously successful in doing what he was put there to do: shift all the money from the poor and middle class to the rich. They cut him off, obviously............

2. They mentioned it on NPR

this morning. I thought, my goodness, Gephart grew a spine? Or maybe the beginning of one? What a concept.

Hope he keeps it up, he's got a lot of making up to do for that Rose Garden performance.

3. Gephardt was wonderful but

I don't think he has a prayer of winning the primary. However, all of these candidates need to call the Bush Administration what it is...a failure. The Repub spinners are already starting to say the the Bush about face in Iraq is a sign of mature leadership. While I'm at it, I must say I was a little disappointed in Kerry. He just repeated lines from his announcement speech and while they were good lines, it made me feel that he didn't care enough about the debate to come up with some new stuff.

5. Raven--as I mentioned, the Hot Line reporter said

that all of them just kind of spewed their usual spin except the Lieberman hit on Dean. And, therefore, Geps line was the highlight of the night. Interesting, they also said that because of the people who were covering this for tv this time, it would have the biggest audience than they will ever get in other debates. It's a shame then that some didn't put forth more. But then, we know this stuff because we follow it. Maybe they just wanted to get their basic message out to as many voters as possible--you know, people who have no clue what they have been saying. After all, the polls indicate that nobody has been listening and can't even name one of our candidates. Maybe that's why nothing spectacular occured last night.

--other than my coffee???----I wonder how the slimy, spoiled boy, moron is responding this a.m. Remember the Bush's (as Buchanan said) richly reward people who bow to them BUT get revenge on people who cross/attack, etc. them. Gep better keep out of light aircraft and stay away from stray razor blades, don't you think. I bet Junior is pitching a hissy fit as we speak. Probably screaming and yelling at Rove and calling Babs to put her bitch mouth to work.

8. The lesson for Democrats....

If you have the spine to speak up, you will be noticed. If you are not afraid to criticize Bush, it will get reported. The fearful, milquetoast responses to radicals like Bush and Rove are a disservice to our Party and to our country. I hope they continue to speak up in such terms.

10. kentuck--I'm thinking of the "it's the economy, stupid" line

that was wildly successful with Clinton. I've said it here many times that we can drone on and on about positions, etc. but we need the snappy in your face comment or comeback line (also: remember the "you, sir, are NO John Kennedy"??? We need a line a week like this and we need one coming out of each campaign camp (they could go on a rotating basis so that Bush/Rove can't go apeshit on just one of our candidates). The American people are just itching to get loaded for bear. They want a line that is okay, finally, for them to say so that they don't appear un-American and out of place. Give them the lines, boys, give them the lines. Don't stop here and don't stop now.

11. Yes, we could ask each candidate the same question ?

Do you think Bush is a "miserable failure"? If they are honest, they will answer in the affirmative. Either way, it keeps it in the forefront of people's consciousness, who are just waiting for the question to be asked. It is the equivalent of "it's the economy, stupid".

The one-liners are what the public will pay attention to. Also, as was earlier posted, this is the first time a substantial portion of the voters got to see all our candidates in action. I suspect that the percentage of voters who cannot name a dem candidate will decrease dramatically over this one debate and will just get better as time goes on.

19. I loved that line

I didn't get to watch the debate but I did hear that line this morning on NPR while driving into work, and the lines he said before it, and it put a big smile on my face. I also loved the loud audience applause.

Slowly, slowly, the rest of the country is going to wake up. I'm more optimistic right now about '04 than I've ever been (even though I'd still put Bush's chances at about 40-45%).
