Al Queda planning new US attacks (fear mongering)
Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 08:15 AM by Mari333
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Department of Homeland Security advisory issued Thursday warns that al Qaeda is working on plans to hijack airliners flying between international points that pass near or over the continental United States.

A department official said most of the flights fitting this description originate in Canada, and that U.S. officials have been working with Canada over the past month to ensure it is improving screening and other security measures.

Gee. I wonder why they would want to attack us again? <satire off>

5. okaaay--'splain this to me, plueese
So I'm watching the CNN ticker and this message comes by that says that the al Queada operatives in this country are now a small group and they are mostly providing support services (or something of that nature). Gosh, see how great Bush is that we are down to only a few?? HOWEVER, may I dare ask: If you know the fuck who they are and where WHY THE HELL AREN'T YOU ARRESTING THEM?? But, I guess we should never question the CIA or FBI or Broncho Bill Bush and their great master plans which have been so very, very successful to date. (Who the hell do we have on our Intelligence squad---a chimp....oh, sorry--yes, we do.)

8. We should be afraid.
The threat is a real one. It is not "fear mongering" to remind the public of the threat we face. Indeed, it is essential to keep folks from getting complacent and remembering that we remain the targets of a bunch of fanatical terrorists.

And anyway, if the Dept. of Homeland Security didn't issue one of these warnings and then we got attacked again, this board would be full of hyperventilating people shrieking "where was the warning?!"

12. If its real, then like I said before
Invading and attacking Iraq in a pre emptive strike on a nation that had nothing to do with 9/11 wouldnt have a little something to do with why we are now the most hated country on earth , would it...
If there are any attacks on US soil again, I point my finger straight at that illegal chimp in the White House and all of his cohorts for creating the climate that would make the US a target.

13. I don't disagree...
...that the war was unwise. It's a question of whether these warnings are appropriate and I say they are.

And I would add that while Iraq certainly exacerbated the hatred of terrorists (and much of the world) for the US, the terrorists hated us long before Iraq and for reasons that are almost exclusively irrational.

15. After 9/11 I wasnt even surprised
The US , if we had been a civilized country, would have asked itself , GEE, I wonder why our foreign policy in the ME is so disliked??? and then perhaps we would have been able to change the format of our Neocon policy, and stopped funding Sharon's policies, and stop being the kind of nation we are..militaristic empire building greedy bastards..
No, we did exactly the opposite.

16. This is where we disagree
I think it would be absurd to shape our foreign policy based on what is pleasing or displeasing to fanatical, fundamentalist terrorists. These people are utterly irrational, and it's wishful thinking to suggest that if only we recalibrate a few foreign policy decisions, they'll stop being mad at us. For instance, they constantly talk about our war on Muslims despite the fact that the US has given a great deal of humanitarian assistance to Muslim countries, from our attempt to prevent genocide in Somalia to our protection of the Muslim Kosovars in 1999.

Also, while our policy toward Israel is imperfect, I do not agree that our general policies in the Middle East warrant the kind of hatred that al Qaeda holds for us. And the status of the Palestinians is fairly low on their priority list. Much higher up is our military presence in Saudi Arabia, which is eminently defensible.

14. Terrorism
"It is not "fear mongering" to remind the public of the threat we face."

What good does it do to remind people? It's not only fear mongering, it's bordering on actual terrorism. Many people seem to forget that a major component of terrorsim is the threat of violence. If the Government kept this information to itself then a major weapon in the terrorists armoury has been removed. That the Government is peddling these warnings is, to my mind, a terrorist act.

I live in a country where the citizens have had to live with terrorists for well over 20 years (the UK) and *never* did the Government remind us of the "threat we faced". It would be pointless and perhaps even counter-productive to do so.

"And anyway, if the Dept. of Homeland Security didn't issue one of these warnings and then we got attacked again, this board would be full of hyperventilating people shrieking "where was the warning?!""

I doubt it. There may be a lot of people shrieking "why didn't you do anything about it?!" though.

11. In Addition. . .
. . .as i posted in the Lounge yesterday, the HS folks have alerted all chemical, nuclear, and water plants in the United States to be "extra vigilant". Whatever that means.

They aren't going to raise the alert level for the general public (which makes no sense, since the point of attacking a nuke or chem plant would be to contaminate the surrounding living areas). But, they want the chem, water, and nuke folks to keep their eyes open.

It was based upon increased al Qaeda traffic. It dawned on me, thought, that these extra communications could be planning a big party to celebrate the 2 year anniversary. I seriously doubt that these folks see that day as a tragedy. They honestly believe they have reason to celebrate.

Just thought it weird that for the first time ever, a specific DHS communique was sent directly to industry like this.

water supply attacks. That Al-Queda wishes to get Americans "at home". WTF?
