I live in Sprint's hometown and they have laid off 20 or 30,000 in the last 5 years. I used to know tons of people who worked there. Now I know one.

Sorry for being so pouty about it.

I had just finished paying bills when I replied originally. (cable,DSL,phone, etc.). My bills are paid in euros...which means I hafta convert $ to pay them. OUCH!

but I don't pay rent or utilities. HUGE savings.

I'll keep my US citizenship. We are looking to retire on this side of the pond, however. (hopefully)

5. Painful in Michigan

They have to make more massive cuts to the state budget this year due to low income --> low income taxes. Granholm has vowed not to cut the schools anymore because we just can't take any more hits after the last few years, but everything else in the budget is supposed to be squeezed.

No, really, it's true. You see, much of the Hawai'i economy is dependent on tourism, and we've seen a huge upsurge in arrivals from the U.S. mainland, particularly the East.

Why? Well, here's where Bush** comes in. Because of his megalomaniac, psychotic, homicidal excuse for a foreign policy, Americans are too freakin' terrified to travel abroad anymore -- so they come here instead!

is disgusting if you are a Democrat or Independent. It's just fine if you are a republican - in otherwords, the republicans in Missouri won't admit to our bad economy, even if they are struggling. I continue to find this amazing.

11. OK, in eastern oregon, but then my area has been depressed

since the twenties, more or less. Industries come and go. They generally go. The last losses were a big layoff at the plywood mill due to increased competition, and the closure of a customer service center, "outsourced" to India. 600 jobs between the two, but still the general economy seems to be ok. Depressed, but we are used to it.

14. Rust Belt Pittsburgh

For most, not so great. If you were doing well 2yrs ago and are well educated, you're probably doing OK. For working stiffs that don't have a broad range of skills, it's a lot tougher. I tend to gauge the situation by the classified job listings. It is generally less than a page and most jobs are either low level or a very specific interest. Whatever happens nationally, people are being squeezed by local taxes, heating and fuel costs, and general cost of living expenses.

I haven't been looking for work, but what I see isn't promising. I vowed not to go back to work until the giggling murder monkey was sent back to Texas. I hope it happens by 2008, I can't afford to loan the landlord too much more to make sure they don't forclose. I hate moving and don't want to waste the money if I don't have to.

I work for the City of Cincinnati and we haven't laid anyone off yet. However all pay raises and cost of living increases have been cut. In general the local economy isn't doing too well.
