Once and for all, Will There Be A Military Draft?

Here's my take. Even if Bush doesn't invade Iran, even if the Iraq elections go off without a hitch and we pull out by the end of March, there will still be a military draft. Why? Because of things like the stop-loss policy and the recall of discharged military personnel back into active duty. No one will ever trust the military again because the concept of an all volunteer military has now been exposed as a fraud. If you join the military, you may never be able to exit your service.

Hence, recruitment will likely suffer and that will compel the need for some sort of draft.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

2. I'm 99% certain there will be

unless they get a sense ahead of time that there will be blind outrage from the public.

They are "testing" it now -- back door draft, or "stop-loss," intense military recruitment, and letting Rumsfailed go on about being in Iraq four years or however long it takes, etc.

If the public feedback is minor, they'll continue to march forward with the draft.

It's just like the way they used Norm Coleman (R-MN) to attack Annan. He got shot down royally and they retreated and left Norm out to dry.

3. I really do not think we are done invading countries.

Syria or Iran, coming up soon. Plus we have taken troops from the border of North Korea, and we are going to need to beef that up again eventually. But even with Iraq alone, within the next 5 years I think there will be some sort of draft. There are only so many retired soldiers you can call back into service.

The all volunteer military works great. We just have to recognise that we must confine ourselves to invading countries like Panama and Grenada. Maybe Fiji. Costa Rica probably has something we want, and the good news is, they don't even have an army. Oh, I forgot, they're part of the Coalition of the Willing. We can't invade them. Yet.

I think we will also see some uglier rhetoric about our troops from the right wing. The truth is that most troops don't come from the very wealthy, so why should they care? Rush Limbaugh comparing troops wanting more armor to office employees wanting bigger monitors is just the tip of the iceberg.

6. Not a "military draft". A kind of "civil draft".

I don't know. But I would not be surprised if there is a provision for a "civil draft" in the "Patriot Bill". I think there will be a kind of draft for "homeland security". Where the draftees stay in America.

How long can that go on without a draft, given that we're not meeting recruitment?

9. I think its on the horizon

With the way our military is stretched about as thin as its gotten these days. I just don't see us pulling out by March, or even next year. BushCo can try to shuffle units around as much as they want but they still don't have the manpower to keep his "war on terror" going indefinatly.
