Man accused of attempting to kidnap 2 girls By SYLVIA LOBATO ALAMOSA — A 49-year-old Mexican National is being held on charges of criminal attempt at second-degree kidnapping after allegedly trying to pick up two young girls on the way to school. Assistant Alamosa Police Chief John Michalke said Manuel Avila Ventura was allegedly driving on State Avenue at about 7:30 a.m. Nov. 29 when he spotted two sisters, aged seven and eight, who were walking to school.
The man, who reportedly spoke no English, asked the girls if they wanted a ride. When the door of his older, gray, 4-door car was opened, he allegedly tried to pull one of the girls inside. Her sister ran for help. The almost-captive girl got loose and ran, Michalke said. The girls told a teacher at Boyd School, who called their mother.

He allegedly claimed his own daughter was with him when he attempted to give the girls a ride, but his wife and daughter both said that was not true, Michalke said.
The man’s wife told police officers that her husband had told her about trying to pick up the girls and she warned him that he could get into big trouble in the United States for doing such a thing.
