My old roomate had the cable in his name and he didn't pay the bill and i couldn't step in to fix the mess (long story) so i just did without cable.

Well since I have high speed Internet thru the cable they can't block the basic cable signal so i get that. Everything was fine until Time Warner sold off its share of Comedy Central to Viacom and dropped Comedy Central from the basic lineup. It was the only channel I watched really.

Now even tho i have basic I almost never watch TV. I used to be such an addict. I'm so much better off now.

Cable TV is the most insidous thing man every created.

something like this existed. I didn't have cable for 2 years, then we broke down and got it, and it turns out I never watch it. The 30 bucks a month I pay is worthless, pretty much. I just want a local station or two, Comedy Central, TLC, Discovery, and CNN. $6 a month would be pretty sweet....

9. Good for you! We kinda did the same thing but not by choice.

For the last 5 years we've been receiving 50+ channels and paying around $13.00 a month for basic cable. The first few months I thought there was a mistake or that the really nice cable guy gave us a deal. As time went on, I thought there probably wasn't a mistake because they never did anything about it. Yet, lo and behold, three weeks ago, my son couldn't turn on Blue's Clues and I realized we now only get 21 channels. I called the cable company to get a repair man out here but the lady said I should have never received that many channels in the first place! I'll have to pay an extra 30 bucks a month just to get the channels we've been accustomed to getting for free!

My hubby thinks we should just break down and pay the moola. But I am refusing at this point. So far, my kids haven't missed it too much so I'm holding out!

I did check out some internet sites on how to rig up your own cable. You have to pay $20 to get their directions of course. I haven't followed through with this yet. Has anyone else rigged up their own cable?

you may be able to get decent broadcast reception with just a cheap pair of rabbit ears. I've been doing it for years. :shrug:

13. get Netflix DVD subscription service

My gf and I subscribe to them (i've not had cable in 7 years, she's been weaned for 2). They're pretty prompt, selection is ginormous, and it's easy to use. We order boxed sets (1 DVD at a time) of TV shows we like. We also watch more things we wouldn't normally think of (documentries, e.g.). It makes TV more of a treat than a habit.

Out of maybe 100 DVDs we've gotten from them, only 2 were virtually unplayable and very few need (careful) cleaning. The failure rate is less than half the rate I've experienced from the local Hollywood Video store.

Honestly - It has made me mellower, it has made me stop assuming the worst of strangers, NO MORE COMMERCIALS!!!! The only thing I really miss is Jon Stewart, and you can watch clips from his shows on the Com Central website. Also C-Span on line is helpful.
I agree with the poster above about Netflix. It keeps me pretty happy.

17. and this is why I'm a anime fan. Fansubs are free till they come to US.

Anime provides much more entertainment then cable and there is so many different types that you never get bored. ADV Films I don't mind because they care more about the fans. They used to throw some of the best parties at a-kon and any convention they went to. Only at a anime convention can you turn Robotech perverted!!!!

tragic. I have no such feelings on awaking... I got woken up by 2
dogs this morning who jumped on the bed and rolled and cuddled until
we were all awake. :-)

Genuine goodwill is so very lacking in our culture, that if you have
an empty house, there is every person you meet in the day, starving
for acknowledgement, encouragement and affection. I don't believe
that a human being needs to "be loved" except at a very young age,
but absolutely, a human being must love. The concept of needing
to be loved is so television. Loving is so dang natural, if you
listen to people from the heart.

We're down to channels 2-13 on our cable and are saving $55 a month. We still get C-span, WGN and the regular networks and Fox. We're watching much less TV.

I turned mine off over a decade ago and have NEVER regetted it. In fact, I stayed in a hotel a couple of weeks ago and was UTTERLY AMAZED by the crap on the tube. Maybe TV has gotten worse since the early nineties, or maybe I've simply forgotten just how bad it is, but I felt like a former smoker who, having quit for over 10 years, takes a puff and goes "ewwww, how could I have ever sucked this shit?"
