1. Hmmm
I heard that the GOP nat'l convention was going to coincide with the anniversary of 9/11 and be in NYC. Guess not.

3. This year he won't commemorate 9/11
He'll still exploit the fact that he was a failure at preventing the worst tragity in American history in 2004.

21. Who says he failed?
Maybe it was a success (from his fucked up perspective). It certainly changed the public perception of his pResidency. And it gave PNAC that "Perle Harbor" (NOT a typo) they were looking for :grr:

2. Now I am certain
that he is off the wagon. By 2004, the fever pitch of pissed off and coughing New Yorkers ought to be deafening. I think he is more likely to see demonstrations during the convention led by 9/11 widows and sick emergency workers than any electoral votes from NY on election day.

4. If you have touchscreen voting, Phony Felon Purges and Absentee Abuse
I can't see how the Emperor can lose.

Remember, they are already planting the Saddamish backstory that they think Bushelr can win all 50 states.

Just like the Hitler plebiscite in 1936...

5. Ahhh...seems like only yesterday
But it was 1975....

I think most New Yorkers "got it" today upon seeing the headline.

19. great juxtaposition!
Especially since Bush is so much like Ford, beginning with his not being elected.

I remember there being lots of angry New Yorkers when Ford made that decision. That was a time when NYC had serious budget, crime, and grime problems (by 70s standards).

Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 06:38 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
thanks for letting me know how much you enjoyed it. My 1st thought today when I saw the headline (as I was walking thru Madison Square Park) was Bush (Ford) to City: See Ya! (Drop Dead).
It's classic. And any New Yorker over the age of ??? immediately would make the connection.

6. you know
there were other places where there were victims, not just NYC. Pennsylvania and Washington DC.

Flame away, my comment has nothing to do with Bush, but everything to do with the fact that there were other victims in other places. They too count.

11. No, it wasn't.
I hope everyone remembers this next year, when the repugs come to dance on the Trade Center site to kick off their convention. This bunch hasn't got a clue about what makes for good public relations, at the very least. And respect, at the very most. There usually isn't a thing he wouldn't do to get votes. I'm surprised that he is not going to NYC on the 11th.

9. Remember...
He knows he has <0% chance of taking New York State's electoral votes.

He's not going to have the nomination in NYC on 9/11/04 in order to impress New Yorkers - he's going to do it in the hopes it will impress people in other states.

What you guys need to do is start making plans to make sure that his carefully tailored message doesn't get on the air without the world seeing a million protestors. Make him regret the stunt.

17. He doesn't think he will
But by saying NY and California are in play he looks like a giant and thinks that his confidence will impress voters. And to be honest, it isn't a bad strategy. Dean did it by running ads in Texas, jut to prove he's got balls.

18. Pataki and other higher ups here have been spreading this myth
and the whole point of a convention is to have it in a state you need to win. I have heard this nonsense spouted here. They are talking about winning NY.

22. Gore won NY 60-35
In order to win NY therefore, Bush would have to pick up more than 15 percentage points, about 1 million votes. More than a million New Yorkers who voted for Gore voting for Bush? LMAO!

25. A lot of things are
Florida would've gone to Gore by 90,000 voters had Jeb and Scalia not done everything they could to make Bush win a state in which he neither got a plurality nor would get a majority of the voters. New York went to Gore by over a million voters, and it'll take a genuine landslide fro Bush just to make it close enough to be stolen.

26. He has a snowball's chance in hell
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 06:43 AM by jumptheshadow
Here's why:

* This town is in economic pain. The 9/11 injury was exponentially aggravated by months of bellicosity toward Iraq and the subsequent war there. The city relies heavily on tourism and international business. Yes, fear of terrorism and the economic climate in other countries have hurt us. But the paralysis brought on by the war, topped off with the gratiutous insults about nations that are good NYC customers, has crippled us.

* Western New York is in economic pain. State comptroller Alan Hevesi has called for the establishment of the Buffalo Oversight and Recovery Board to try to rescue that city from its hellish fiscal hole. On balance, the Dem senators have been responsive to WNY. The Republicans have been clueless.

* The EPA story has legs. And it only will get bigger once our politicians start doing their research and realize that millions, not thousands, were probably affected. The densest smoke spewed into neighborhoods that are 70 to 85 percent Democratic. Many of those areas have not been funded for any medical studies or follow-up at all.

* Every day in NYC people put their lives on the line by getting on subway trains to go to work. The channeling of valuable resources to Iraq is registering with the electorate. The closing of fire stations, the stories about the lack of equipment for first responders, the dragging of feet on federal aid is registering.

* New York is a sophisticated city with a mix of highly educated and streetwise voters. Bush is seen as a moronic boob here.

Also, consider this: What if relatives of 9/11 victims team up with families of soldiers to coordinate a media campaign prior to and during the Republican convention here? They would wield a powerful message to voters in New York and across the country, for that matter.

27. Planning for the convention is CRITICAL to us
all good Democrats and progressives of all stripes must get together and put forth the best possible face to the world.
We must not let the protests degenerate in a way which will hurt us.

28. Strategizing against Rove's script
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 10:07 AM by jumptheshadow
I hope it doesn't degenerate into an ideological pissing contest, because we have the facts on our side. We have the high ground, and by September, '04, even Middle America will see it.

The Republicans have been choreographing the propaganda around this event for a year now. We must respond with well-conceived strategy of our own. We must use our resources wisely because our opponents are going to have money to throw at us.

It's inevitable that there will be arrests and some fights. Fox, et al, will play up the images of disruptive protesters. There has been a groundswell of anger building in this nation, and it will find an outlet in New York next year.

I agree with you, however, that we must focus our efforts on methods that will most effectively win independent voters over to the Democratic ticket. I want to see a million, even two million, protesters in New York so those aerial crowd photographs will be spectacular. But let us follow the vision of Martin Luther King and let our great numbers, and our persuasive ideas, get our message across.

As the manager of a small business in New York, might I add: When you visit us, support our wonderful, progressive city. Go shopping for a day. Tour some of our ethnic neighborhoods, stop for a meal, and ring up a big bar tab! Keep us in business so we can continue to support the Democratic party.

(Edit for spelling. I am the editing queen.)

to create a tie. That's how voting machines will be set.
