I hope everyone remembers this next year, when the repugs come to dance on the Trade Center site to kick off their convention. This bunch hasn't got a clue about what makes for good public relations, at the very least. And respect, at the very most. There usually isn't a thing he wouldn't do to get votes. Florida would've gone to Gore by 90,000 voters had Jeb and Scalia not done everything they could to make Bush win a state in which he neither got a plurality nor would get a majority of the voters. New York went to Gore by over a million voters, and it'll take a genuine landslide fro Bush just to make it close enough to be stolen.

Here's why:

* This town is in economic pain. The 9/11 injury was exponentially aggravated by months of bellicosity toward Iraq and the subsequent war there. The city relies heavily on tourism and international business. Yes, fear of terrorism and the economic climate in other countries have hurt us. But the paralysis brought on by the war, topped off with the gratiutous insults about nations that are good NYC customers, has crippled us.

* Western New York is in economic pain. State comptroller Alan Hevesi has called for the establishment of the Buffalo Oversight and Recovery Board to try to rescue that city from its hellish fiscal hole. On balance, the Dem senators have been responsive to WNY. The Republicans have been clueless.

* The EPA story has legs. And it only will get bigger once our politicians start doing their research and realize that millions, not thousands, were probably affected. The densest smoke spewed into neighborhoods that are 70 to 85 percent Democratic. Many of those areas have not been funded for any medical studies or follow-up at all.

* Every day in NYC people put their lives on the line by getting on subway trains to go to work. The channeling of valuable resources to Iraq is registering with the electorate. The closing of fire stations, the stories about the lack of equipment for first responders, the dragging of feet on federal aid is registering.

* New York is a sophisticated city with a mix of highly educated and streetwise voters. Bush is seen as a moronic boob here.

Also, consider this: What if relatives of 9/11 victims team up with families of soldiers to coordinate a media campaign prior to and during the Republican convention here? They would wield a powerful message to voters in New York and across the country, for that matter.

28. Strategizing against Rove's script

I hope it doesn't degenerate into an ideological pissing contest, because we have the facts on our side. We have the high ground, and by September, '04, even Middle America will see it.

The Republicans have been choreographing the propaganda around this event for a year now. We must respond with well-conceived strategy of our own. We must use our resources wisely because our opponents are going to have money to throw at us.

It's inevitable that there will be arrests and some fights. Fox, et al, will play up the images of disruptive protesters. There has been a groundswell of anger building in this nation, and it will find an outlet in New York next year.

I agree with you, however, that we must focus our efforts on methods that will most effectively win independent voters over to the Democratic ticket. I want to see a million, even two million, protesters in New York so those aerial crowd photographs will be spectacular. But let us follow the vision of Martin Luther King and let our great numbers, and our persuasive ideas, get our message across.

As the manager of a small business in New York, might I add: When you visit us, support our wonderful, progressive city. Go shopping for a day. Tour some of our ethnic neighborhoods, stop for a meal, and ring up a big bar tab! Keep us in business so we can continue to support the Democratic party.
