Well said. DESPISE is a far better word than hate. Hating them gives them too much power over you. While I very much dislike these right wing demagogues, some of the responses here, particularly about killing them or wishing death upon them, shows an identical, if other side of the political coin, fanaticism.

The best response, IMHO, is to personally ignore them, meaning not buy any of their products and work to convince family and friends of the danger to democracy these people and their one-sided commentary pose.

I don't listen to the radio. I have a huge stash of jazz mp3s and CDs I keep in close contact with at all times. I'd much rather listen to Ornette Coleman or Charles Mingus than any talk radio blowhard. Much better for mental energy.

...of being a "pro-Democrat" rah-rah go team post, this trivializes the deep and serious problems we have with the press and media and the threat that represents to our form of self-government.

Why encourage hate? Why turn serious issues into the equivalent of a sports contest?

Please don't tell me to lighten up and get with the spirit of the game. Hatred and the death of the free press are not funny and they are not trivial.

I understand your response. Last Spring I was driving a car that wasn't mine, and was accelerating into traffic before I realized what was on the radio station, and was too pre-occupied to turn it off right away. I involuntarily heard about 5 minutes of Sean Hannity, and was really disturbed by it. In those few minutes her called liberals traitors to the country, the teacher's union a terrorist organization, and the Democratic party Marxist and atheist, then said that gays were trying to destroy marriage and the family, all of this in an aggressive and sneering tone of voice. This all in just a couple of minutes. Very frightening.

How can any observer, regardless of their political ideology, think that this is OK? But apparently the show is successful and there are people listening to that stuff every day, yes?

The man is disturbing, dangerous and ugly, but somehow hatred seems weak and inadequate as a response. So when I say I don't hate them, I don't mean we should accept or cave in to what they are doing.

Hatred - or the perception of it - weakened the criticisms of Bush during the campaign. People are able to say "oh, sure they would say things like that. They would say anything. They hate him." Neat trick - supporters for the hate agenda calling the opposition the haters. Of course it isn't fair, and it isn't right, and we should be able to hate these people if we feel like it, but if we are serious about stopping the hatred it is more effective to develop a stronger form of resistance to the tyranny.

It is complex and I understand your feelings.

Ann Coulter, saying things like "the best way to talk to liberals is with a baseball bat" is, to me, an invitation to bash her head in with a baseball bat.

Well, I would never invite her back to dinner, that's for sure.

Not that it is funny. You are right, it is just disgusting and over the top and needs to stop. I just can't work up hate for her, though, as I would feel like she had gotten to me or controlled me somehow if I did, you know?

It may come to violence, but if it does we will lose and how in any direct confrontations. She and others are conditioning people to accept violence against us, and trying to provoke rash reactions from us that will justify violent repression. But she won't be on the front line with a baseball bat, tanks and troops will be her proxies.

There is a false dichotomy here - be tough on them or go easy on them. Tough meaning hateful and violent, easy meaning passive and inert. I am saying be tough and smart. Hatred isn't smart because it clouds our thinking. Hatred is an inadequate tool. It is being too easy on them. I am saying we need to be tougher on them than merely hating them.
