Attacked by Freepers: video tribute sparks wingnut rage

As you guys know, I haven't posted much in my blog since the election. Taking a breather, thinking things over, that type of thing...

Today I discovered my blog has been receiving a lot of hits in the last 24 hours, all of them coming from that execrable "Little Green Footballs" website. They have posted over 40 nasty comments in the blog, and sent me about as many hate emails. They are complaining about the tribute video that I posted, and making some nasty, tasteless fun out of our grief.

To make matters worse, they have reported my website to the RIAA for using Kate Bush's song even though it was fair-use, non-profit.

That has worked well for me. I used their IP addresses to ban them. They can still read all they want... they just can't comment. Of course, they still send hate mail... but that's easily re-routed to its own folder.

Here's the thing. It's not personal. They don't care who runs your blog and they don't care what you think. They are there for one purpose: to rattle you to the extent that they themselves feel rattled. If you don't let it under your skin, it pisses them off.

17. I wouldn't worry about the RIAA

First, you are not trying to sell this video. if you were selling it, you'd be required to pay royalties and all that junk, but you're not.

Second, if you do own the album this song came from, you DO have fair use on your side.

Third, The RIAA is really too busy suing 12 year olds and grandparents for file sharing. There's a lot less money in going after you for use of a song in a personal video project than going after peer 2 peer users.

Last summer we worked in a very interesting study of terror alerts and contrasted that data with Bush's approval ratings. The results of our study were quite telling, and posted them on our blog.

Within hours I got a massive wingnut swarm, a truckload of virus-laden emails (which I was able to filter), and eventually a denial of service attack. They hated it my post and attacked my site and my email account.

In two days my computer went nuts and could not restart without reinstalling the OS. Lost about 40% of what was on the hard drive and had to install a new one. It was a nightmare.

The only thing I have to say is that those people are nasty and don't play nice.
