This week's Bill Moyers NOW - globalization: rich world, poor women
http://www.pbs.org/now/thisweek/index.html

This week on NOW:

This NOW with Bill Moyers special report examines how global corporations may be riding high by shortchanging the worldÕs women. After two decades of the unprecedented opening of world markets, some women have been beneficiaries of globalization, many more are its losers. Today, most of the worldÕs poor are women - and most of the worldÕs women are poor. Friday, NOW examines the female face of poverty in three segments:

In WOMENÕS WORK, NOW delves into the world of laborers in Thailand, where poor battle poor to secure long hours of work and low pay, and finds a hero standing up for her rights against insurmountable odds.

In BROKEN PROMISES, NOW travels to Senegal and inside a seemingly inescapable cycle of poverty to look at how policies of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have decimated the once-thriving education and healthcare programs and undercut womenÕs chances for a better future.

Bill Moyers interviews Dr. Vandana Shiva, the scientist and activist who has traveled the world challenging the rules of globalization for the last 20 years.

1. Moyers is the reason I have no social life
on fridays. Well, that in my penchant to bash the Chimp with no provocation. Obsession can make you a lousy party guest unless it's a DU bash.

:grr:

"...the Coca-Colas of the worlds, the Cargills of the world, the Monsantos of the world, the Suez-Vivendis of the world rest on local elites. They rest on local elites who also benefit out of destroying the livelihoods of their own people. It is not the case that Indian elites don't join with the global elites. Globalization in my view is a partnership of elites to exploit the people of the world against the democratic will of people."

(snip)

"Well, if globalization was founded on democratic decision making from the ground up, it would create more freedom of interaction. It would create more flow of positive ideas, more universal solidarity among communities. But globalization as it's shaped right now under the coercive rules of trade under the World Trade Organization, of the World Bank and IMF structure adjustment, basically doesn't create wealth."

(snip)

" The current globalization is trying to build a roof by eating out the foundations. And there is panic because it's a false building. It's a building that's going to crumble. It is already crumbling."

7. Wonk. I didn't see your thread. KICK.
This globalization shit is depressing the hell out of me. Can you believe Coca Cola taking for free, something that should belong to the people? They are taking water out of the Ganges River at no cost. The locals are forced to dig wells for drinking water, water that is not safe.

This show tonight has opened my mind to what is going on not just in India but the whole world including the USA. Corporate evil. The BFEE is part of a planetwide evil that appears too large to be stopped.

8. Powerful show!
It simply amazes me that ANYONE (and there are plenty of DUers who fall into this category -- ugh!) can continue to support globalization as it is now constructed. It is the very antithesis of democracy, it is fuedalism on a planetary scale. It is an absolute atrocity!

12. All Americans need to see this.
Cheap labor conservatives are doing their damnedest to add the United States to their growing list of completely exploited countries.
