Was anyone in direct touch with "the other side" during the Clinton years?

Was anyone in direct touch with the Republicans, or with Republican grass roots people, during the Clinton years? I'm wondering if they felt then as we feel now. I know their hatred of the Clintons, specifically, was deep and palpable, but what was their overall mood? Was it like ours is now?

I was blissfully out of touch with them back then. The times were good, our guy was in the white house, the economy was rocking and rolling. Life was good. My business was new and starting to really grow, and that's where my focus was. So I can't say I knew how "they" were feeling because I simply didn't pay any attention to them.

And yes, it speaks to the methods of those with the wherewithall to be "in charge" of the right wing extremists. My question was more to the ordinary person, the ones like you and me, but on the other side. How did they feel?

2. Living in the deep south, I run into these people more than a few times

They did feel like we feel now - but only for two years 92 till 94. They were happier when the GOP made big gains in 94, they took both the house and senate. Their pain was brief the tide was very obivously tuning in their favor before Clinton's first year in office. Clinton won in 96 a little unhappy but still had control of congress to comfort the pain. 98 they were a little miffed/distressed about the Dems gaining three or five seats while the house was writing up articles of impeachment. But did that set back stop the house Repugs? - NO! They went right ahead with impeachment. Maybe Dems could learn something from that. On edit I forgot to mention the Allen, Rudy, Whitman win in 93 helped ease the pain for them too. So they have suffered nothing like we suffered the past four years.

3. Some similarities I think

One is that many Republican grass rootsers never could agree that Clinton was elected. Union thugs stealing votes at the machines and buying votes were standard fare.

"There's no way America will elect a person like HIM," was something I heard from relatives. They mainly settled on Ross Perot as the reason.

It was a difficult thing for Republicans to accept that there were more of "them" than there were of "us".

Then there were the conspiracy theories. Webb Hubbel was cleaning up the mess, Vince Foster was killed so he wouldn't spill the beans. So was Ron Brown.

Really I think there are some similarilies.

I think the biggest ones are the conspiracy theories which have mushroomed with the internet, and the difficulty to accept that in this election there were more of "them" than there were of "us".
