This past cycle started with as much ABB sentiment as pro Democrat sentiment. The 08 cycle is likely to be even worse in terms of the horrendous future posed by the right, unless *they* have a split and their moderates divorce from the extremists. A while ago I saw that as a real possibility, but now, I think the chance for such a schism has lessened.

Unless you're completely suicidal, you should not go to a third party. The very fundamentals of our system make the chance for a successful third party less than zip. If the Dems don't fit you, work to change the party from within.

I know everyone has heard that before, but think about it. Really think long and hard. The left is totally out of power. We're lucky if we have a few dogcatcher slots in elected government. We're lower than whale shit, folks. We can NOT afford to splinter.

I think the DLC will be gone by the time the next cycle rolls around. Maybe not for 06, but it is even possible they'll be gone then. I personally want to see Howard Dean as DNC Chair and see some real change happen. I can see a groundswell of real grassroots influence on the party. It isn't there today, to be sure, but it will come.

And everyone needs to be willing to compromise something to come to a common point from which to move forward. And no, I am NOT suggesting a rightward drift. If anything, the drift needs to be to the left.

The fact is, we - all of us no matter what flavor of the left we are - have better policies than the right. Our positions are good. Sure, you want it this way and I want it that way, but the middle of those two points is far, far better than anything the right has for us.

We have to stick together and the Democratic Party is the only game in town (said with nothing but with genuine goodwill to the Greens and Libs).

I'm not sure how, or IF, I'll be voting in 2008.

I'm just so discouraged with the entire political system now. I gave money twice to the DNC this last campaign season, with the hopes they would use it to stand up and fight for my values and my interests.

Yet they just keel over and play dead. There is a lot of political cowarice in the Democratic Party.

I want them to be just as angry as I am about the fact that in places like Ohio, there were not enough voting machines in predominantly African-American neighborhoods, people waiting over 4 hours to vote, and some gave up. That is an outrage; it's disgusting and there is no excuse for that in 2004.

Yet many Democrats, save for the Congressional Black Caucus, are acting like it's no big deal.

Depends on what the Democrats do between now and then and also on who each party nominates.

If by some chance the Republicans nominate a moderate republican whose name is not Guiliani and the Democrats nominate a politician whose politics are essentially the same as said moderate Republican, I will be sorely tempted to vote third party.

If there's a strong right wing third party candidate, a moderate Republican candidate and the Dems nominate a total sellout I could also vote third party.

The Democratic Party has really lost it, and I'm not talking about the presidential elections, (which they actually won, but didn't intend to win, so they're laying low on the elections fraud and waiting for it to all go away)but now the party has all but openly admitted (publicly and officially) that they intend to PURGE the party of progressives.

If DU'ers are not aware of this fact, it's damn time you get yourselves informed. unless of course, you agree that the progressives should be purged and that the party should move further than it already has to the Right. I'm not sure how far right the dems want to go before they're satisfied it will have wooed a significant number of former republicans to switch over, - but this should be viewed as nothing short of an outrage by progressives if not insane.

Some progressives say, good! let the Dems try and do this so they can lose more elections and the Green Party start winning significantly in what has been long held by Democrats.

As someone who has been a Democrat nearly all of my life, with a brief engagement with the Greens in 2000 - I haven't decided yet, if the purges will be a good thing for the progressive movement or not. I understand the argument, and to a point it makes sense, but will the Dems succeed in pulling the wool over the eyes of the rank and file into thinking they're still all about traditional progressive/populist values, in order to placate these concerns, and to get dems to "shut up" and "fall in line"?

As i read a lot of threads in this website, it appears that not enough are as informed as people should be and are easily distracted on nonsensical issues.

I'd prefer to see rank and file progressive dems really take back the party, give voice to our values and principles, including doing fierce and open battle in strong opposition to the radical right wing extremists, and the FASCISTS who now taken full control of our entire government. (no thanks to the lily livered, mealy mouthed, but war monger dems in congress including Nancy Pelosi, Senator Feinstein, Senator Barbara Boxer, Senator Harman, Senator Kerry et al)

I'm not stone-cold committed to any party anymore, and quite frankly, have never been. While the Dems represent most of my issues and priorities better than the GOP or Greens, in many ways I feel isolated from Democratic policies -- such on abortion -- that leave me at times feeling politically homeless.
