2. Outrage overshadows real issues

We hear these "conservative outrages" every holiday season: the ACLU sucking God, Christmas, and Christianity out of America; purging it of any religion, morality, or spirituality. And while some claims may hold merit (for people to be as outraged as they are, these charges have to have some credibility), all too often, they overshadow real social and political concerns.

Political cable talk shows take "the purging" on as a theme, covering it all year around, exploiting the issue and manufacturing it into a grand point of debate and discussion. Meanwhile reports of an increasing number of Iraqi veterans coming home from the war and showing up at homeless shelters, statistics confirming that this year, 1.3 million more Americans fell below the poverty line, (brining the total number of Americans living in poverty to 36 million) and how even though heating costs will increase by 24% from this time last year, both Congress and the President have underfunded the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, are all under reported.

But these stories, told during the holiday season, embody all that is good in Christianity and should spur greater charity and compassion. These are the stories that should serve as a religious rallying point and bring more people into the church. Christian charities do such work all year long (many churches help the poor may their heating bills for example) but their charity is not covered in mainstream media. And if it is, it's always second to "the moral outrage over the ACLU."

I just wished a Jewish friend merry christmas yesterday, but quickly realized my error and wished him Happy Hannukah. Then he told me it ended last week but thanks anyway. I can live with that.

around here, it's the Republicans who are against mentioning Christmas at school or in government buildings. I think that's ridiculous. I suppose Happy Holidays is fine since it covers them all. But there's no reason to get pissy about Merry Christmas.

Restoring Christmas to the season

One of the surest signs that it is Christmas season is the incessant attacks by the secularists on the holiday itself. From the removal of mangers from public squares to the banning of Christmas carols from school plays, the attacks on this holiday have been steadily escalating. Indeed, it is frowned upon to wish someone "Merry Christmas", as the culture now prefers the innocuous "Happy Holidays" instead. All of this is not surprising, given the all-out war our culture and the left have declared on Christianity itself.

Christians, however, can take great solace in the meaning of the season, as so beautifully stated in Luke 2:10-11: "But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.'" Those words are as significant today as they were 2000 years ago. Merry Christmas to all.

The Macy's policy of ignoring the phrase "Merry Christmas" is a slap in the face to all Christians. On Dec. 7 and 8, I wished my Jewish friends a "Happy Hanukkah." On Dec. 24 and 25, they will wish me a "Merry Christmas." Macy's wants to reap the monetary benefits of Christmas and at the same time not recognize it. Since that is their policy, you obviously should not purchase Christmas gifts there, so I won't. Their sponsoring of the Macy's parade to usher in "the holiday season" and featuring Santa Claus at the same time, obviously has their PR and marketing departments confused. Their "politically correct" stance is a farce. "Merry Christmas!"
