Due to growth rates in various populations in the US in about 20 years or so, whites in this country cease to be a majority. The USA will truly be a melting pot of various ethnic groups. The birth of the GOP nightmare is coming true. The Bush presidency is an example of an attempt to cater to the current minorities, and making few inroads in that regard.
Even while the GOP contemplates the ramifications of losing the majority of one part of its base (white males), the other part is also losing ground. Christianity itself is threatened from being the dominate religion in the US in the near future. Evident in the shrillness of the Christian Right, and calls for a "Culture War" between them and non-Christians, they see the writing on the wall. The very foundation of both thier belief system and inherent racism which allows them to dominate the debate in this country is threatened.
The realization that thier base is slowly being marginalized to minority status. The GOP is attempting to reach out to those very minorities they have been trying to marginalize for 40 years. Evident in the 2000 election, they have little chance of gaining ground in this regard, and losing the Muslim vote is going to cost them dearly. They face a problem, having to change to a new reality in a party that by its very nature resists change. The Bush administration, in response to these pressures, is apparently, through recent actions, marginalizing certain minorities using questionable means. Under the blanket term "National Security" who knows what they can get away with. With the new executive powers granted to them, they are already in the process of creating a regime very simular to one they admired before, South Africa.
They are in the first steps of creating an aparthied regime, using felony purges and secret courts, and targeting specific groups. Right now it is Muslims, and Arab-Americans, which ethnic group and religion will they target next?
