Um, why does the Red Cross need to know who clicks to their website from? After all, it's EASY to trace where visitors to your website comes from. This extra work means somebody is getting paid. Who. And why.

If it's not a plain site link, and is loaded like the wallyworld one, you know somebody's making a profit off of it. (or how can they not?)

By the way, I applaud APPLE for having a plain link.

2. as you say, there are other methods of establishing where a link came from

so I wouldn't read to much into this - probably the web designers decided this was the easiest to program at short notice.

It needn't be for profit - they probably just want to be able to brag "Walmart customers donated x million to the Red Cross".
