Jobs for Veterans .....any hints?

my brother just returned from iraq and the local veterans services are stretched thin apparently, he's looking for a job and was wondering if there was any employer (aside from the PO, where is applying today) where they are known to fast track veterans into positions.

A good percentage of my new hires are veterans recently separated from the military.

he said to thank you. i don't know his exact skillset, because i make it a policy to never inquire, but he did tell me he was MOUT for a good portion of it. anyway, he will probably attend the event in raleigh in a few weeks

4. I read recently that Maytag

has a program for returning vets, they are looking for vets to learn how to be appliance repair men, might be worth a shot.

6. Scour US govt. sites for jobs

If he has an ability to write reasonably well, just above the functionally literate range even, he has a good chance of being hired. Any job w/the feds, even w/the FBI as a paper pusher, would buy him time to hone his skills and work his way up, taking advantage of vet benefits and the points they offer within the federal system.

He can get Vets preference in almost 99% of all government jobs. It helped me on my job search.

it takes effort to get the forms filled out, and others should review your final submission....but the Federal Government is STILL the biggest employer for Veterans...there are LOADS of Civilian jobs on every military base, and LOADS of civilian jobs in most major American Cities...everything from maintenance to computers, from sorting mail to managing people....if you get your resume done ONCE, you can send it around easily...requires computer skills....

Then there are these sites, where you can search by location, and see all the jobs in your area....these jobs are usually on or near military bases, but are listed for the whole country....

Veterans with Disabilities get 'preferential' treatment in Federal Jobs (extra points)...I'm not sure if bush* is giving any extra points for Iraq war Vets, probably not, but you can certainly find that information on the USAJOBS site....

anyone applying for Federal jobs should be willing to put in a WEEK of hard work on a computer, with FRIENDS helping them with 'constructive criticism' and 'key words' etc......

10. The top homebuilders like to hire ex-mil to train for Construction Mgmt...

generally speaking. Pay ain't bad, bonuses can be geat, and a few years in you can be into or damned close to 6 figures if you're good.

11. What rank is he?

The Home Depot has a couple of programs that might be useful to him.

The first one is the general veterans' program--I don't remember the name of it, but we're working hard to increase the number of veterans we employ. This is mostly for enlisted people.

The other is the Leadership Program, which is open to commissioned officers; it's usually open only to MBAs but a company command will also get you in. Our store manager (Annapolis grad, US Army infantry officer) and my assistant manager (West Point grad, US Army air defense artillery officer) are in this program. Basically, they send you to school in Atlanta for several months, put you in one store to get some experience, then move you to another store and promote you to store manager. The store manager has been with the company for sixteen months.
