My application for a position on my local draft board...

... is winging its way to me as you read this. Does anyone know the proceedures after I sent it back? Will I be selected right away? What are the chances of not being selected? Is there a background check? How thorough? I mentioned all of this to a co-worker who voted for * because God told her to. She is very upset that I may be on the board because she "knows" I will only draft republican kids.

That's one way to stop the war. I've lost a few friends by telling them that I hope they get drafted to fight the war they supported and haven't looked back. Any chance of a 22 y/o liberal who speaks his mind of getting on a board? :)

5. Here is part of the e-mail I got in reply to my inquiry...

...To serve as a Local Board member, an individual must:
1. Be a citizen of the US, at least 18 years of age
2. Reside in the county where the Board has jurisdiction
3. Be registered with the Selective Service, (males only)
4. Be able to devote sufficient time to accomplish Board Member duties

A Board Member may not:
1. Be an active or retired member of the Armed Forces or Reserve
Component
2. Be a member of a law enforcement occupation (example: Police
officer,
judge)

Training:
1. There is an initial 12-hour training session in members’ duties and
responsibilities.
2. In peacetime there is a 4-hour refresher course each year.
3. In the event of a national emergency the time requirement could be
a few
hours each month

Remuneration:
Local Board Members receive no pay for serving on the Board. They are,
however, reimbursed for authorized travel expenses incurred while
conducting
SSS duties.

I understood from the letter that I received that if there are vacancies one will be contacted, interviewed, etc.

9. I'm A Board Member

You should be contacted by the head of the local board in your area, as for the background check, they will be using your social security number to do the check.

I've been a board member since February 2004, but so far there hasn't been any training for the position, the training is supposed to be a twelve hour course on procedures and policies.

Tell your co-worker that you will be unbiased, and that you will apply all of the rules equally, to both Democrats and Republicans.

In my time when boys were being drafted-if you came from a farm family you did OK, if you came from a rich local family you were golden-if your dad worked in a factory you were screwed.

Because of the enormous impact of this lottery, it would be conducted publicly, with full coverage by the media. Accredited observers from public interest groups will have full access to observe the proceedings.

To make the lottery as fair as possible, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developed a unique random calendar and number selection program for Selective Service. Using this random selection method for birthdays, each day of the year is selected by computer in a random manner, and that date is placed in a capsule. The capsules are then loaded in a large drum on a random basis. By the same method, numbers from 1 to 365 (366 for men born in a leap year) are also selected in a random fashion, placed in capsules, and the capsules are placed into a second drum. The process, repeated a second time, results in two sets of drums. Official observers certify that the capsule-filling and drum-loading were conducted according to established procedures. This certification is secured to each drum; they are sealed and placed in secure storage. Should a lottery be conducted, one of the first actions would be an inspection of these stored drums and the selection of a set to be used in the lottery.

After the lottery is completed and results certified, the sequence of call is transmitted to the Selective Service System's Data Management Center. Almost immediately the first induction notices are prepared and sent via mailgram to men whose birth dates drew the lowest lottery numbers.

This system, based on random selection of birth dates, with the order of priority for reporting assigned in a scientifically random manner, is a fair and equitable method of calling men to serve.

20. If I was on the draft board

and Junior is driving a Hummer, he'll still be driving one after draft board- in Iraq.

No sense that he should play soldier without having the chance to be one- wouldn't be Amerkn.

Truth is though, I couldn't play god- noone would go to war if it was my choice.
