Coulter's Argument Against the New York Times

A few days ago I was think about one of the arguments Ann Coulter made in her book "Slander". Coulter argued that the New York Times showed is liberal bias when it did not mention the death of racecar driver Dale Earnhart on its front page. I know that many liberal writers have proven that Coulter's statment was false. However, there is a point that I have not heard made about the statement. I think that the argument that the New York Times did not need to and maybe should not have mentioned the death of Dale Earnhart on its front page.

Even if the New York Times had not mentioned Earnhart's death on their front page that would not have proved that it had a liberal bias. The New York Times is a newspaper not a sports newspaper. Earnhart's death was a sporting incident not really a news incident. There probably were much more important news stories that could have gone n the front page of the New York Times.

NEW YORK — NASCAR promoters spent $100 million to buy a vacated 450-acre industrial site along the Staten Island waterfront recently but said it would be at least five years before one of their races is staged in New York City.

International Speedway Corp., the motor sports operator backing the project, said that it had closed on the purchase of about two-thirds of the 660-acre proposed site. It plans to build a $440 million complex on the site, with a three-quarter-mile track and a grandstand that seats 80,000 people.

Earnhardt was to NASCAR what Barry Bonds, Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods are to their sports. If any of them passed, I believe the NY Times would and should treat it as a front page event (barring the occurence of an event like a tsunami that kills 150,000).

5. That absolutely does not prove bias

The NYT has become a very lazy newspaper. They no longer investigate stories, only repeat each side's spin. The only "liberal" section of the NYT is the Editorial and some of the Op-Ed writers. That being said, I don't think NYT has a republican bias, either, which is what many here at DU think.

but dying while racing and dying while golfing are two seperate things. While I can't stand golf in the least, it is not exactly a death-defying sport. I am not really a NASCAR fan either, but part of the thrill is the danger.

...nothing less from Coulter. The front page is determined by what kind of news is available, daily. News items always are weighed by their importance and then vie for the front page. Usually, a meeting of top editors decides what makes the front. Obviously, a larger paper like the "Times," being broader in scope than, say, the "Birmingham (AL) News," would have a broader scope of stories from which to choose for the front page.

Coulter is a nutcase.

BTW, I am a NASCAR fan (FIVE WEEKS TO GO!) who drove his F150 with "Bush Lied, People Died" on it right into infield at Talladega Speedway in October to watch the race. And not ONE of the supposedly redneck knuckle-dragging Republicans that NASCAR fans are stereotyped to be (by a helluva lot of Denmocrats) said a thing to me, either way, about it. And that in a state that voted 63 percent Bush.

Actually, most of them there were far more upscale than I am!

Lastly, keep your eye on Carl Edwards! The man can drive!

for international affairs. That's their goal, anyway. Whether you think they live up to that ideal is a seperate question.

The death of Dale Earnhardt, while sad for his family and many fans, was not an international incident. So no, the story didn't belong on the front page.

And since when did we take anything that Ann Coulther said seriously? :shrug:
