Easy Smile Hides Iron Will to Win
First-term senator forges ahead at an unlikely pace as he sets his sights on the presidency
By ROB CHRISTENSEN AND JOHN WAGNER, Staff Writers
Johnny Reid Edwards hit hard, even in high school. His intense drive and confidence were obvious to Willis Barrett, the football star at North Moore High, who was big and fast enough to become a starting linebacker at the University of Arizona. Even today, Barrett shakes his head when he remembers how Edwards -- who may have been the skinniest guy on the squad -- always lined up against him in tackling drills.
Edwards usually got the worst of the exchanges. But Barrett, now a Moore County schoolteacher, remembers something else: He went through his junior year with a deep thigh bruise, the result of a punishing hit by Edwards.
"He seemed to get joy out of it," Barrett said, chuckling. "John would hit you. I mean, he would hit you."
Barrett was among the first to experience Edwards' relentless nature, but he wouldn't be the last. Edwards successfully sued obstetricians and corporations on his way to becoming a multimillionaire. He defeated U.S. Sen. Lauch Faircloth in his first political campaign. Now he's working for the chance to line up against President Bush next year.
