RED ALERT: Draft could be just weeks or months away

Those of you who have draft-age kids or know draft-age kids, please, please, PLEASE make your preparations NOW. If you don't want to have them sere, get them lined up with Quakers, or Bretheren, or get a Canadian lawyer lined up and get your escape plans in order. PLEASE. The draft is probably only months away.

Paul Martin says he will accept American draft avoiders as well as defectors from the US military, at least for the time being.

Leaders of the Church of the Brethren say they will follow through on a request from the Selective Service to have "alternative service" programs in place for conscientious objectors if a draft is reinstated.

As one of the historic "peace churches" that shun military service, Brethren officials were "cautious" after an unannounced visit by a draft official to a church center in Maryland last October. Officials were worried that the visit signaled that a draft may be at hand.

In follow-up meetings, draft officials urged the church to dust off long-standing "alternative service" programs that allow conscientious objectors to serve in two-year domestic service projects in lieu of military service.

In a meeting Dec. 10, the church's council voted to "maximize our efforts" on alternative service, as well as help "guide our youth in their choice of nonviolent service."

Please, please, PLEASE don't wait to plan this out. Have your plan in action now. Get your teenage passports NOW. Today. Have your land route out of the country ready NOW. Do not delay, do not waver, do not rationalize. You will need everything ready for a proper response when the draft kicks in. This is the loudest possible warning of impending action that could happen.

Has anyone noticed the number of cleverly camouflaged Army recruting ads they're playing on TV lately?

Look for the Army recruiting logo (star) in the lower right corner of the screen for the last few seconds of any ad that portrays young adults or teens. You don't need to hear the sound.

The Selective Service doesn't come a-knockin' at conscientious objector churches for no reason.

You have warnings, you can choose to heed them or pretend nothing's happening and "get caught by surprise" in the latter case. If nothing's wrong, at least you're prepared. If something DOES happen, your preparation could save someone you love.
