If he increased property taxes on the rich, like Warren Buffett suggested to him, that would drive down the cost of real estate and create the revenues to balance his budget. But as a stupid Republican he can't see the forest for the trees.

2. Increased tax of any kind

is anathema to conservatives. Never mind that it might solve some problems and help create a better society. In my state many institutions reliant on state aid are facing cut backs because the conservative leadership won't raise taxes to cover the shortfall. Just a slight increase in the state income tax would solve our problems. I don't mind giving a little extra to the government if they are going to do something good with it.

3. The thing with property taxes in California

is that the rich and rich from out-of-state are buying up all the prime real estate because our taxes are so low. Most of the time many of these homes go empty while the poor are crowded into apartment houses if they can afford the rent.

I definitely would keep the taxes low for a family home. But I think all vacation homes, spec homes, rental homes and homes for out-of-staters and second homes, should be taxed because this is taxing wealth. This would open up the market and lower the prices.

I didn't think this up, Warren Buffett did and Arnold dissed him for doing so.

exactly what should be done; even just a small increase on COMMERCIAL property would do the trick; comm prop rarely changes hands (at least in a manner that would trigger a Prop 13 re-assessment), so gets even BIGGER tax boon under Prop 13.

Our State Representatives and Senators could meld a viable compromise to amend 13 that would have a chance for Arnie's signature. We all know corporate property owners are getting a pass on taxes and County coffers - which mean schools and public safety - are drying up quicker than the Salinas in August.

California's gerrymandered, extremely partisan statehouse doesn't entertain the thought, though, even in light of our enormous deficit.

There's a give and take opportunity somewhere in this mess.

(aside) I am not in favor of a recall effort. The Davis recall fiasco was a lesson for us all, imho.
