Caroline Kennedy, Oprah, or Tom Hanks for President?

On his second interview on this morning's TODAY show, Michael Moore said that despite the fact that the Republicans claim to "hate Hollywood" their most successful presidential elections have come from running "stars," and that the Democrats have to find another star of their own. He reminded everyone that Kennedy and Clinton were both "stars" (of sorts) and that that was the kind of candidate we should be seeking. He specifically said that Bayh was NOT a star of presidential material.

When Couric (yuk)asked him for specifics he said that Tom Hanks would be his personal favorite, but also mentioned Caroline Kennedy (someone I had never thought about running before, but it makes sense if she would be interested) or Oprah. He said, "Who wouldn't vote for Oprah? (Personally, she is not a favorite tv personality of mine...but...what the hell.)

4. Opraization vs. Arnoldization of candidates

The other day I started a thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1470793 wondering of whether these are the only candidates we should have, that carry their hearts on their sleeves.

Moore interview just confirmed it. I have always knew that Bush was just a prop for the RWers, the way Reagan was: a pretty face who would say and do what is told. And Moore, I suppose, is correct that the Republicans have good set designers, and script writers etc.

He said that the voters want a candidate with whom they can get a visceral reaction and his examples were just that, and example.

Sadly, I have to agree with him. As we have noticed too many times, the American voters distrust intellectuals, do not want to be bothered about thinking - otherwise they would know that the policy of cutting taxes and increasing spending is bad - and just want a soothing vote and a happy face.

While I agree that it is a sad commentary on our governmental affairs to have to reach for "stars" because of their appeal to the masses, I think we have to understand what the public will choose and what they will reject. And there ARE "stars" out there who are also intelligent.

I know that Oprah is not liked by many people here, but I think she would be ideal. She is so mainstream and so well liked.....like MM said, who wouldn't vote for her? She is an amazing humanitarian and has done a lot to bring many important, taboo issues to mainstream America. She is filthy rich yet beyond generous. No one can deny that. I could go on and on. She'd have my vote, hands down. :D
