4. One of the greatest moments in my life

was shaking that man's hand and getting to speak (briefly) with him.

He changed my life. He's changed a lot of lives.

8. It was a big thrill for me when I met him

I got to talk to him for a while with a group of activists. He also signed a book and a poster advertising his speech on the campus.

He truly has changed the way I think about the world and is always a source of inspiration and sometimes disorientation.

The invasion of Iraq in March 2003 by coalition forces has lead to the death of at least 100,000 civilians, reveals the first scientific study to examine the issue.

The majority of these deaths, which are in addition those normally expected from natural causes, illness and accidents, have been among women and children, finds the study, released early by The Lancet on Thursday.

The most common cause of death is as a direct result of violence, mostly caused by coalition air strikes, reveals the study of almost 1000 households scattered across Iraq. And the risk of violent death just after the invasion was 58 times greater than before the war. The overall risk of death was 1.5 times more after the invasion than before.

The figure of 100,000 – estimated by extrapolating the surveyed households’ death toll to the whole population - is based on "conservative assumptions", notes Les Roberts at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, US, who led the study.

That estimate excludes Falluja, a hotspot for violence. If the data from this town is included, the study points to about 200,000 excess deaths since the outbreak of war...."END SNIP....

So Zinn did not exaggerate, though he said he did.

He was exaggerating when he had originally said 200,000. That was his first guesstimate, than he narrowed it down to 100,000, which is the correct number.

Howard Zinn is an excellent writer, I actually read his book back in high school and his book so piqued my interest in history and politics that you now see me here in the DU website trying to become more active.

Larry King interviewing Howard Zinn. "Ah-h-h Howard. So, about Columbus...." Larry's such a lightweight. I heard King once say that he doesn't even prepare for interviewing his guests. The C-Span interview was great as was the one with Chomsky. He and Zinn are for the long attention span crowd.
