Any one know the growing sesen for Opeum?

The book I am writing has a secrit government opeum crop being grown in Kansas. What sesen would this take place at? Is the soil in Kansas make this resonable (at least withen the writer's license.) Thanks. :)

8. back in the olden days

the feds busted a lady for growing poppies and selling the seeds. these weren`t the asian poppy that produces alot of "sap" but the orange and red kind. the feds claimed she was a drug dealer by having a mail order seed business. but...if if the conditions are just right you can get a low grade sap out of the red and and orange poppies...
