The origin of Holy Joe
OK, isn't Holy Joe the name of a Chick tract? From what I remember, it's something like there is a soldier in a platoon who is always frequently teased by the rest of soldiers for flaunting his religion constantly, and they call him Holy Joe to mock him. Then he talks about all the fundie eternal salvation stuff, and then the commanding officer mocks him and says he doesn't need. Well what do you know, in battle the commanding officer gets mortally wounded, Holy Joe gives him the fundie spiel, he buys it, and then dies and goes to heaven. Not too bad for a Chick tract I must admit, no laughing about people of other religions in burning in hell or talking about how Halloween is a tool of Satan.

But if that is the case, then Holy Joe is most certainly not anti-Semetic, it is simply a term that someone lifted from the tract as it also appropiately describes Lieberman as it does the soldier in the tract.

1. I think I remember that tract.....
But I never considered the epithet "Holy Joe" to be Anti-Semitic.

We call him Holy Joe becasue he is so sanctimonious about his faith--and that could apply to ANY faith.

Lots of people are religious--its just that Holy Joe makes SO MUCH of it, it makes many of us SICK.

2. Exactomundo
You can be jewish and be attacked for religious reasons without any anti-sematism being involved - especially if you are a hypocrite.

3. well that's exactly why people call him that but the Lieberman apologists
who keep claiming anti-Semitism is the reason bring up that term as "proof"

It may me laugh hard for a very long time. The innaccuracies are so great it makes me wonder how anyone can take him seriously.

11. They scared me shitless when I was younger
to the point where I actually did tried to get "saved/born again" but could never have some major transformation, shows just how lame it is that anyone would pass those out to little kids.

That one however, probably wouldn't of affected me at any age. I doubt that could get anyone to stop playing D&D since anyone who knows one iota about it is aware of how innacurate that tract is, but I suppose it could get some fundie parents upset if their kids were playing it.

then there's this one too: http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0011/0011_01.asp I've always wondered why I never met any kids who had fundie parents who didn't let them celebrate Halloween.

5. It's a direct jab
at Joe's religion, and how observant he is of Judaism. It's extremely disrespectful, but I wouldn't expect anything else from Butterfly.

10. You are totally wrong, and you are merely playing the "race" card
Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 03:58 PM by IndianaGreen
in this particular case, the "race" happens to be anti-Semitism.

You know this very well!

I recommend to other DUers that they read this thread in which I discuss how the Lieberman apologists are constantly smearing liberals by saying that our opposition to Lieberman is because he is a "religious" person. You can see for yourself what TheYellowDog had to say.

Is Lieberman truly "religious" or is he a fraud?

9. It's not the "J" word that bothers many about Holy Joe........
Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 04:16 PM by fla nocount
.........it's the "Z" word and where his loyalties lie. What's his agenda, what are his priorities. Is Joe truly a part of the diversified and amalgamized mass of humanity calling themselves Americans, or is he something else entirely? Maybe its just me, maybe it's just my question.........somehow, I don't think so. Transparent bastard.

12. It's a good thing Bush isn't Jewish
or I guess we wouldn't be allowed to criticize him without being accused of anti-semitism.

There are plenty, plenty of reasons to dislike this man. Personally, I would love to see a Jewish president, but I would like him to be an actual Democrat.

Leiberman has many ties to fundamentalist Christian groups, which he has attempted to disassociate himself from now that he is running for president. Check this out:

Someone who was a part of the diversified and amalgamized mass of humanity calling themselves Americans. Such a void in his passing. The laws of nature will demand that the void be filled.

20. "Holy Joe" is ANTI-SEMETIC?????
Who says so? Some Sharon apologist?
I've had it with all this "anti-Semite" mud-slinging at anyone who doesn't want to roll over and give Sharon a free life-time pass....

<grumble>

Fine, we'll call him "Jowly Joe" and leave religion out of it, even though I suspect that HE won't leave his religion at home.
