Why is god's name would you go to Olive Garden when you can go to Radicchio or Matyson or Caffe Casta Diva or even the old Fri Sat Sun or Astral Plane or a hundred other good restaurants?

But we're spoiled - I'm not sure WHERE I'd eat in Houston if I were to boycott chains...

The Hobbit Cafe (vegetarian and more)
Bombay Palace (indian)
Star Pizza (pizza!)
Amy's Ice Cream (ice cream!)

Any mom and pop Vietnamese restaurant in Little Saigon
Any mom and pop chinese restaurant in Chinatown
Any taqueria in Spring Branch

Houston has more restaurants per capita than anywhere in the country! Great, great restaurants, not just the chains.

5. Aside from the fact I disagree with most of what she says...

She strikes me as just as out of touch by saying that Applebee's is "moderate-to-low-priced"

I go to mostly mom & pop joins here in San Francisco, and they are no more expensive than Applebees.

I can't eat out, even at cheap joints, very often due to budget constraints.

I never eat there regularily, not one near me, and too expensive to be eating there daily. But every once and a while when I have alot of money and I go into the city I'll go eat it.

The in-laws love these places for some reason, to me, most of them are :shrug: at best, going quickly to :puke:. When it is up to my wife and I, we'll either eat at home, since we now live in the middle of nowhere, or eat at a local restraunt. The food may or may not be more expensive, but the quality is always much better.

Of course I patronize the local Thai restaurant, and the Indian one too. So I don't eat only at chain restaurants.

18. Not really...

All the chain restaurants here are in a ring around the mall. The wait on weekends is more than an hour, a half hour during the week. The local Applebees has the rudest people working as greeters and waitresses and I refuse to ever step foot in it again. Olive Garden I go to once every two or three months when I visit family in Pittsburgh. There aren't very many mom-and-pop restaurants left in the area and the ones that do exist don't have very good food. I tend to cook at home 99% of the time. My neighbor and I are both Italian mamas so we cook a ton and share with each other all the time. We order in pizza once or twice a month.

You can't get me into an Olive Garden or Chili's though...bad imitations of ethnic food, politics aside. If I want good Italian food, I'll make it at home or go to a 'mom & pop' Italian restaurant...not Olive Garden.

Generally, I prefer my own cooking, but a T.J. Cinnamon's Cinnamon Roll is Truly Awesome...and if I'm on a road trip to Ohio, there's always a good reason to stop in Breezewood, PA on the way and get a Roast Beef 'n' Cheddar at Arby's :)

Back during the Clinton health insurance debate, Pillsbury, which owned the Olive Garden, claimed that it "couldn't afford" to buy health insurance for its employees.

I found that very off-putting, since I knew much smaller businesses in Portland that either paid for or subsidized their employees' health insurance.
