Will Bush's speech turn the tide?
Let's face it, Bush has some great writers. Rove is a genius. he is a good speaker when it's all written out for him and rehearsed. Could they come up with something tonight to shift the momentum back in Bush's favor?

2. I doubt it....
Let's be honest. In our society 1 "oh shit" = 100 "attaboys" and once favor is lost, is very hard to regain. Anyone who has come to the conclusion that Bush is worthless or a great big fake is not likely to be turned around by a speech.

3. 5pt bounce for 5-7 days
I don't see any turning of the tide, especially if he begs for BILLIONS of dollars and soldiers continue to be blown apart daily.

4. Turn the tide of the cesspool?

Doesn't matter which side you're on. It'll still smell like crap.

5. i think DU is making
way too big a deal out of this speech tonight...

he's gonna say we need the un's help, that things are getting better in iraq, that life is better for the iraqi civilians than before, that america must be patient, and that the fight against terrorism takes time (and money)... he'll also intersperse 9-11 shit in there too for appeal...

that's my take on it... it's not gonna make a big swing either way...

we're spending way too many threads on this...

8. It is a big deal
He's coming with hat in hand, asking for 87 billion dollars. He'll get it, but it will cost him explanations about an exit strategy, about a plan for Iraqi self-rule, about a UN power-sharing plan. And he'll also be lambasted over asking for more money while cutting domestic services, all in the shadow of his theft of the US treasury.

So yeah, it is a big deal. It's not the end of the line for the Smirkster, but he's being driven into a corner of his own design.

17. He's pissing off the base.
The FReepers don't want him to go kissing French ass to get help, which is what he's going to have to (and should have to) do. If his base turns on him, that's a BIG deal.

6. No, he can't
It sounds like he's going to knock the ball into the UN's court. But he's not going to concede a damned thing, not going to give any member countries what they want in exchange for help.

So I don't think a UN resolution will end up being introduced, much less passed.

Then it'll be time to play the blame game once again, shifting responsibility for Bush's adventure to the UN. But blaming the UN won't get anything done. Meanwhile, things are still spiraling out of control in the Hell that Bush invaded and took over.

Also, there are 9 Democratic speechwriting teams waiting patiently for the minute the Idiot finishes, so that they can release statements from their respective candidates. No free lunch for the cokehead anymore.

7. Democrats need to attack right after the speech and for the next week
We can't let this help him, even though the media will do everything they can to defend and support him.

13. I Think the Dems Should Lay Off the Blistering Attacks For a While
Dems shouldn't do anything which might give the public this impression that they tried to sabotage Bush in Iraq. I think Bush is getting himself into such a mess right now the public will gradually turn against him anyway. Bush's biggest asset in 2004 would be some perception that the Democrats didn't give him the support he needed. If Dems give this support--while announcing that they disagree with the policy--the public will focus their anger next year on Bush. There's a thin line here. When people get angry they look for someone to blame.

To John & Jane Doe, Iraq talk is just blah, blah, blah. If it's all about Iraq, it will be quickly forgotten...

10. MSNBC says he'll ask for $87 Billion for Iraq and Afghanistan.
I just don't think that's going to go over very well with tax-cut-lovin' Americans, do you?

12. No, This Speech Will Be Like Reagan's First Comments After Iran-Contra
He'll set out in folksy terms that "mistakes were made" but everything is fine now and we have to stay the course. And the American public will get even more anxious and wonder if he's just lost it.

16. Why do we need a UN resolution
Assuming I didn't think for myself and I believed everything this administration told me, I would be very confused right now. This IS a multinational force. We are 60 nations strong. This is the coalition of the willing that told Saddam to disarm and not the US & Britain invading on their own. Isn't that almost half the countries of the world. If half the world is behind the war, why do we need a UN resolution to get a multinational force in. We have 60 nations helping us - we're set, right. Oh wait, many nations didn't give any money, or troops, or want their country even named. But they did want compensation for their secret endorsement. Oh, right another lie. At least they do not pretend anymore that it is a multinational force of 60 nations. Why doesn't anyone call them on it, or the fact occupation would last 60 - 90 days, or that the war was over? I won't even get into the reasons for war.

18. No more than Nixon's speeches did, by 1973-74.
I suspect the public has a concrete opinion now of bush. It probably won't change much, unless something HUGE occurs.

BTW, I am NOT saying that I think bush is toast. He might be, but we can't say, yet.

20. No
this is not a speech which I find at all inspiring. He is glossing over too many questions: where are the WMD? lying about the reasons for the war, The cost of the war, and the sacrifice in more lives. If he gets a bounce it will be short-lived.
