WILLIMANTIC — City and state police are investigating the death of a 5-month-old Willimantic girl. Erika Martinez, 20, of 67 West Ave., was arrested in connection with the death, ruled a homicide, by the state police Major Crime Squad at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday. She is charged with risk of injury to a minor in connection with the death of her daughter, Amaya Serra-Martinez.

According to police, emergency medical personnel were summoned to 67 West Ave. on a report of an unresponsive infant at about 12:30 p.m. Friday. When they arrived, they found the child in cardiac distress. By 1:24 p.m., the infant had been pronounced dead by staff at Windham Community Memorial Hospital. After an autopsy, the state chief medical examiner’s office ruled the infant’s death was a homicide. She died of a head injury.
