LA Weekly: Chertoff protected senator forced out by finance scandal; Seeks Homeland post as springboard to Supreme Court

Veteran journalist Doug Ireland is set to issue a stinging rebuke of Bush Homeland Security nominee in this week’s L.A. Weekly, RAW STORY has learned.
The piece, which details the rise of the federal appeals court judge and post-9/11 Ashcroft favorite Michael Chertoff, sheds new light on the nominee who is little known outside New Jersey and inside the Beltway.
The nominee, Ireland says, was a partisan juggernaut as U.S. Attorney in New Jersey. But he says Chertoff spared former Democratic Senator Robert Torricelli–who was forced out of his job over a spate of campaign finance violations–as they were buddy-buddy on the Jersey political scene.
