We have IRV here in SF for citywide races. I'd love to see it state-wide, but I'm not holding my breath. :)

12. Well, we had the good sense to at least get voluntary publicly funded

elections.

IRV has come up before, but what keeps getting it smacked down is a) costs and b) election officials who don't want the extra work.

So it depends on whether or not we can convince the public that it would be a good thing to have in place, and whether we can sell it as being worth the money. And right now, our budget is tight, just like most other states.

Still, it won't hurt to try. :)

25. They "sold" it here as a way to save money

We usually had expensive run-off elections for supervisor that not many people voted in. IRV, while complicated has probably saved SF a lot of cash. Once we have a few elections w/ IRV there should be some interesting data that you guys might be able to use to argue in favor of IRV (in terms of cost-cutting).

4. I always vote

At least I try to. I'll vote next year in the governor's race, in 2006 in the Congressional one and in 2008 in the Presidential one. If they have any others locally, I'll vote in those too. Actually I think in my state the vote is pretty honest, though it is a red state.

It's important not to just vote in the Presidential election.

10. Well..i agree at local and state levels..always vote, but

i, personally feel..well..so abused by what i completely believe was a fraud this time around..in november..and that i believed that my vote would actually be counted..there is much talk about the 3 million number...but also believe that if the machines can be manipulated..and were...whats 3 million..just a number. If 10,000 votes for Kerry are "inadvertently" given to Bush by error...then why not 3 million? I feel pretty much pissed off..at myself, that i believed my vote meant anything this time around. So, if nothing changes, i doubt if i will believe it will be counted next time around.

Regardless of whom I vote for, even if I couldn't care less about the person, I want all parties and interest groups to be absolutely aware that I exist, and that my demographic is worth fighting for.

I am also acutely conscious of the fact that people literally suffered and died so that there could be some degree of accountability of the government to the people. Yet democracy is no better than tyranny, without the active participation of an informed electorate. It would be a betrayal of everything important to me if I didn't at least try.

What is important, is what we do between now and November 2008.
We must sell the liberal/progressive message better than the Reich wing does.
That is much harder considering the media but we must find ways.

If one does not vote, then one can not complain about the outcome.
