‘America is a Christian Nation’ preaches intolerance

Reading Mark Outland’s letter “America is a Christian Nation” gave me the sensation of being unstuck in time. Suddenly I felt as though it were 1936 and instead of reading the Amador Ledger Dispatch, I was perusing the Voelkischer Beobachter, which was Hitler’s favorite newspaper and in which many articles extolled the virtues of a religiously pure nation.

The letter’s intention appeared to send a warning shot across the bow of anyone who is not white, heterosexual and Christian, saying you better get out of town before the steamroller of our intolerance crushes you. He takes inspiration from our president, who once asked “Is our children learning?”

The next time Mr. Outland drives his confederate flag festooned pickup truck to his White Citizens Militia meeting to spread the word about the dangers of the real KKK (kikes, kommunists and koloreds,) he can take comfort in the fact that he has allies all over the world, most notably Osama bin Laden, who also dreams of a nation, no - a world, governed by faith-based principles.

When I read letters like that, it gives me some hope. Sadly, there are more of 'them' than there are of 'us'....right now at least.

I think there are waaaaaaay more Liberals in this country than Conservatives. The problem is that many of our people are at the bottom of society and believe that the system is hopelessly corrupt and that voting will make no difference. Also, many people who vote Republican would probably actually agree with Liberals on most issues, but they've been brain washed into voting for people who don't really represent their views.

3. Very interesting post -- microcosm of religious debate

I did a search on the last name of the guy who wrote the "America is a Christian Nation" letter. Lots of people wrote in expressing dismay at the piece (good letters, too). One person, however wrote in claiming that the paper wasn't publishing letters in support. Thanks for posting that -- it's an example of how crazy this stuff all gets.
