Probably for the better...after all, it IS Tribune Media Whores. They publish the supposedly-independant chain of Advocate Newspapers, which have several editions covering from the NY/CT border to Vermont. Nearly three months ago I met with their HR person about a Senior Designer job. Money sucks right now, and I don't make enough off the cartoons to pay my own way, so I applied for a Senior Designer job they advertised. I'm well qualified...I've published my own full color magazine, worked as a design consultant for two different Fortune Fifty companies. And my politics seem perfectly suited for the supposedly lefy Advocate papers.
Three months, at least, since I first spoke with HR. I did the follow-ups, and even sent a second package three weeks ago, since the job was still posted in their help wanted section, yet I hadn't been called back. Well, maybe they checked out my web site, and seen my rants against the republican media, including Tribune, who owns the only big dailies in Connecticut, plus two of the teevee outlets.
I got a letter today, finally, saying sorry, I didn't even make the first cut for interviews! I'm dumbfounded. I've NEVER been weeded out in the first round before. I've only lost one job I've ever interviewed for, and that was because they felt I had spent too much time as an independant to begin working under a corporate art department. The HR guy said my resume was perfect, lots of relevent experience, the right keywords, very professional, all that rot...but not even a call back. Just a short, sweet rejection letter.
Wow. Bummer. I also sent in a package for a designer for the Connecticut Senate Democrats, just before Christmas, and haven't heard a word. I'm beginning to think I've been blackballed or something!
Or maybe the economy isn't really as sweet as Georgy-Porgy's been telling us. Just as well...a paycheck from Tribune would have felt dirty anyway. At least, I keep telling myself that as I scrape up money to pay my broadband and hosting bills.
