I grew up with Jim Crow. I had family hurt by the Nazis. I remember what it felt like to be marginalized. Maybe things ARE too easy for some or they just don't really get it. Live in aparteid or Jim Crow, watch injustice without the slightest hope of every getting any, be on the fringes, have to step into the gutter to let others pass on the curb, ask about relatives in pictures and be told they were made into soap, lose the only life you have to a systematic repression, I guess you have to experience -some peope- the hatred and evil to understand it and how easy it is to come back.

Do you really believe that fascism can't happen here? That there won't be camps for innocent people to be imprisoned in for the entirety of their lives? Its happening here. Bush has his own gulag. He's torturing people. Can't happen here? Get over it?

Just one example. A few years ago when I worked in a toy store and I saw a woman scream at her daughter "I'm not buying you a fucking nigger doll." Of course when she saw me she shut up and when she came to my register she was extra polite and said I was "really articulate." Racism is alive and well it's just more underground than it use to be.

Ever hear of the "culture wars"? Just more code speak for racism. Have you been down south lately? My last trip through Tennesse showed me that the latest fashion craze for the backcountry boys is a T-shirt emblazoned with a Confederate flag, with the caption "Its a white thing, you wouldn't understand". Do you remember the whole flap over the Monday Night football intro with Terrel Owens and some Desparate Housewives star? Do you think that people would have been screaming so much if it didn't depict an interracial couple? Of course not, for otherwise how would the soaps stay on the air?

Racism is alive and well in this country friend. Yes, yes, it isn't the outfront, in your face racism of fifty years ago, but instead it has become much more subtle. I'm white, and I see it amongst my fellow red state citizens all of the time. I don't know where you live, but if there is truly that little racism where you live, I think that you had better keep quiet about it, otherwise you're going to have a few million people flooding your town next week.

Look at the prison system, and the inequities of how the death penalty is applied along racial lines. Look at the disparity in the employment figures, not only how many of each race is employed, but what jobs they get, how much they get paid, and how quickly they get let go when the economy turns south. Hell, back in the eighties our very own government let the scourge of crack cocaine loose on, not whites, but no, amongst the African Americans in South Central.

Being polite is just a cover for people now, just like the token members of the Republican party. I agree that to a small extent racism has lessoned, a little bit. But for the most part, racism has just morphed, becoming more subtle, harder to catch than in the bad old days of Jim Crow.

They found this African American kid strung up from a radio tower in Springfield. Of couse the cops, being the incompentent, racist bastards that they are, did absolutely nothing except to state that it must have been a suicide, despite the fact that from the coroner's report, and eyewitnesses, it was virtually impossible for the kid to get himself hung and wind up in the position he was in. Oh, and the kid was dating a white girl, and by all accounts the family, father and big sons absolutely hated that fact. Hmmm.

And while it wasn't a hanging, what was the name of the African American gentleman who was dragged to death in Texas?

And then there is the stats and the inequity of the application of the death penalty to consider. Amazing how skewed our justice system is to killing African Americans, eh?
