THE Church of England is struggling to find a new name for the world’s oldest profession. One idea is to call prostitutes “people involved in prostitution”.
The Church is backing plans partially to decriminalise offences related to prostitution, according to a paper published yesterday by its mission division. The Church says: “Traditional terms such as ‘prostitute’ and the historical legal designation ‘common prostitute’ carry strong derogatory and stigmatising overtones.”
Alternative terms such as “sex workers” were also unacceptable because they carried an air of neutrality that could normalise activities that are not normal, the paper says.
Although not in the paper, other suggestions made by one bishop included “first professionals”, a reference to prostitution’s common designation as the world’s oldest profession, or “holy strumpets”.
The paper, already being referred to as the Church’s “missionary position”, sets out a Gladstonian drive for moral improvement to help better the lives of the nation’s prostitutes. An estimated 8,000 work in London alone.
