Well, I did it - I sent it for all the good it does to talk into the wind, but it's gone. I guess I should expect that knock at the door very soon.
September 7, 2003
Dear Senator DeWine:
I just heard George W. Bush propose that Congress allot another $87 billion of our tax dollars for his war against terror. Since you are a representative for the people of Ohio, for heavens sakes, stand up and tell this President that he is risking our nation's future for generations if these funds are appropriated for this foolhearty mission. You must know, Senator, that on top of the tax cut he demanded and that Congress approved, and that has still failed miserably to stimulate our economy, this is certainly not advantageous. Empoverishing the middle class and bringing further misery to the poor of our nation will not halt terrorism here or abroad; in fact, that may bring it ever so much closer to home, Senator. Desperation is a seductive temptress! Filling the pockets of those already far richer than most will certainly not bring a halt to terrorist actions. In fact, that greed for the "profits" of war is epitomized in the persons of Mr. Kenneth Lay and the devilish schemes that most likely had their infancy in the closed meetings with our Vice President. On what basis will will you or the American public decide what steps to take when the information is being kept secret even from Committees who have a need to know. I have a far better chance of being victimized or killed on any street in Dayton by a drunk driver who has lost his work, his family, and his dignity as an American.
The economy of this country cannot hold up under the load of George W. Bush's prayers to Congress. He sounds so much like Janis Joplin's ungrateful plea, "Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz." Many Ohioans have been hit hard by unemployment, even as he promises our work to foreign nations, especially in the Information Technology sector; our schools have great problems providing the type of education and skills necessary to compete in a global way or even to support a home and family, once the strength of America. A generation of Americans, deprived of their livihoods, pensions, savings, and assets in this poor economy are worried how they will live out their lives. All Americans need better ways to maintain adequate medical care presently and in the future. There are plenty of kids being left behind in our own nation because George W. Bush wants to chase down terrorists around the globe even while he refuses to adequately assist the Governors of our 50 states meet federally mandated programs in Education, Health and Human Services, especially needed in times of high unemployment, Homeland Security, Medicare, and Social Security. He has brought embarrassment to our nation by his insistence that pre-emption was necessary in Iraq. His arrogance has thwarted a united diplomatic solution to the problems our military faces because the administration has miserably failed to make, protect, and secure strategic areas of the Middle East. His continued bias in favor of corporate "friends" who have profited at our expense, Mr. DeWine, is a direct attempt to undermine the basis of our own economy. His actions do not follow the best examples of our Constitution and Bill of Rights; in my opinion, he has betrayed his Oath of Office, and he has applauded the likes of Secretary Asscroft's Orwellian Patriot Acts I/II that restrict Americans civil liberties. Whether Ambassador's Wilson wife was an agent for our government or not, an official of his administration has done great damage to many potential sources of intelligence by revealing her name to the media who has lawfully chosen to protect his source until a court demands truth. The treatment of those transported from Afganistan to our Cuban based prison is a travesty of "due process." Is he waiting for an Act of God, a hurricane, to relieve him of that situation too? Beyond that, as we face the anniversary of September 11, 2001, we still need answers to pressing questions. When will Congress say "enough, Mr. President, please leave the keys under the mat as you leave."
Believe me, if you do not call a halt to the mockery he is making of the Office of the President of the United States of America, the one I used to know, of the People by the People and for the People (of the United States, first), I will work hard so that you too will become unemployed as my representative. For heavens sake's, have lunch with Senator Byrd from our neighboring state, and get some gumption. I have had enough of George W. Bush's shoddy representation of my country, haven't you?
Sincerly yours, Susan M. Lange
